Was checking a site out, when I came across the breakdown of this steel. Has anyone heard of this or worked with this before? Or is it just something else renamed?

Elements N-690
Carbon 1.07
Chromium 17.00
Cobalt 1.50
Copper -
Manganese 0.40
Molybdenum 1.10
Nickel -
Phosphorus -
Silicon 0.40
Sulfur -
Tungsten -
Vanadium 0.10

Curiousity is killing me on this one, namely the high Cobalt content.

Bohler Steel of Sweden make and market N-690. It is their equivalent of 440C. Living in South Africa it is one of two steels that are readily available to us. I have worket with it extensively and have had very few problems with it.

Thanks Gavin

I first thought it was similar to 440C but the Cobalt threw me off -

Elements 440C
Carbon 1.10
Chromium 17.00
Cobalt -
Copper -
Manganese 1.00
Molybdenum 0.75
Nickel -
Phosphorus 0.04
Silicon 1.00
Sulfur 0.03
Tungsten -
Vanadium -

I appreciate your help!

Seems to be quite similiar to the Japanese VG-10 steel.

VG-10
C - 1.00
Si - 0.60
Mn - 0.50
P - 0.030
Cr - 15.00
Mo - 1.05
Co - 1.40
V - 0.20

Is there a url or phone # where one might make contac to purchase some of this steel. Gavin, can you acheive a mirror finish similar to the new cpm154 or rwl34, WITH THIS STEEL.

Ragnoor,
I know about RWL-34, but is Crucible now producing powder metalurgy 154?

From what I have gathered off the net, YES. I have not talked to Crucible Steel yet about it, but will shortly.
