I've just got the new GEC 66 jack and love it except for the nail breaker backsprings. Both the main and pen blades are about an 8 which is abnormal given the other GECs i have. Will they loosen a bit over time? I've oiled the joints which has helped a bit. Thanks in advance!

Must say I'm surprised by that. The spring on my 66 Slim is very moderate (not weak in any way though) perhaps the Jack is an entirely different animal?

Thanks Modoc.

That's strange! Hopefully it will loosen up after I follow Modoc's advice. But it's not unbearable, I open it just enough with my nail to pinch it open which works for the time being!

My #66 Calf Roper is probably in the 6+ range.

It's nowhere near my #72 Cody Scout (8 to 9) which has already broken several nails and snaps like a bear trap. I tried letting sit at a quarter stop for about 3 day to loosen up the backspring. No joy.

Same on my new 66 slim. It's hard to tell, though, because I'm still so thoroughly goggle-eyed and blown away by its awesomeness!!!

I own 4 examples of the 66 and have no issue. The one nail breaker I did have was an 85, and it eased up over time.

I've had a few GECs like that, blow away by how cool they looked. They weren't anything but a paper weight if I couldn't get them open though. Some pretty knives though.

I have found the first run of the 66 jacks have a lighter pull than the latest run. My pumpkin acrylic jack is much nicer to open than my new smooth yellow rose from the recent run.

I think the two blade, single spring models that are similarly sized like the #66 calf roper slim, #68 white owl, & #33 conductor are known for having some of the lighter pulls available from GEC. It wouldn't surprise me that the standard #66 has a heavier pull since there is a single spring for each blade.

The springs on mine are nowhere near nailbreakers. Very reasonable pull. Just perfect, in fact.

Out of interest, which Slim did you get?

The 66 Jack I have in Rotten Banana Bone, a first series issue, also has mild but acceptable pulls with tidy snap.

Thanks, Will

Mine's purple sage bone. I'll post pics at some point, but I'm on the road right now.
