I would like to get a knife with Damascus steel, but what to look for? How do I judge the quality of this type of steel? How about sharpening,is it difficult? Then what about cleaning and maintenance? Will rust be a serious potential problem? I've heard that original Damascus steel was notoriously strong but how about the modern version? Are there differences between countries? Japan, India, Russia, America, Germany? What about finishes, matte or polished? Need your wisdom on this please.

Todays damascus is a blend of steels with different alloys so that when etched, will show the pattern that was manipulated during forging. There is being produced now, both high carbon and stainless damascus. I would make sure that the steel was made by a reputable maker or company and was a pattern that you liked. Carbon steel will rust and stainless will rust less. I have been carrying a carbon damascus folder and have no problems with it. I also wipe it off and clean it after using.
The finish will depend on what you like. Some lightly buff the blade after etching and some just clean up and hand sand the high layers to make the contrast more apparent. I have done it both ways and after being used a while, they will both look the same.
