No response to this in the "Makers" forum, so I'll try here:

I've searched and I can't find the answer to my question: when a maker has sent me a finished slipjoint (with pinned scales) and I find that that blade is quite a bit off-centre in the trough - is it possible for the maker to correct that if I send it back to him? (1. I am willing to pay for the work, and 2. the original price of the knife is such that if the answer is "No", I can live with it.)

TIA

It may be possible; some makers crink their blades, that is, actually bend them for fit. Some (and I presume most custom makers) grind the blade to shape. I'd contact the maker-it could go either way. IMHO, if it was a medium+dollar knife, I'd expect that it would be fixed.

edited to add:
Are you actually in Clearwater? There's only a few of us Tampa bay area Knuts on BFC.

Mate if you got it & not 100% happy with the fit & finish send it back to be rectified. I don't think you should have to pay, as most makers I've dealt with are more than happy to ensure I'm satisfied with my purchase & I'm sure most makers would. See what he has to say.
I think the maker could fix it just might take a bit of work.
Good luck

To clarify what Dijos said, slipjoints that have multiple blades that fold towards each other have the blades "crinked" at the tang so that the don't hit each other when folded.

But if it's a single blade knife, the blade should be centered.

In the final fitting of a knife, crinking is standard procedure, whether 1 blade or multi-blade, to ensure proper fall. If the tang has been properly annealed to ensure toughness, crinking should be no problem. The blade is placed on a knifemakers anvil, and given one or more raps with a cutler's hammer to bend it slightly as needed. Any knifemaker proud of his work should fix a custom knife at no charge. I sent a 6318 CV stockman back to Case, and they crinked the blades for me, at no charge, to correct a fall problem. And that was a hardware store sale knife at $14.00!

Thanks, guys - I knew I would get an answer here. Under any other circumstances, I would send back the knife and ask for an "adjustment". However, this is a special case and I may just keep it 'as is'. (BTW, it's just a single blade.)

Largo, actually - on Walsingham, near PJ's Oyster Bar! We've split our time annually (and legally :) ) between Largo and Toronto for the past 22 years. If I had MY way - FL 100% of the time.
