Naked and Afraid gear choice?

So I am watching Naked and Afraid on discovery and I thought to myself what would I take with me if the opportunity arose to be on the show. After going back and forth like I was flying out tomorrow, I decided I would take my GI tanto, just because its tough as hell and easily replaceable if it did fail. What would you guys take?

I really liked the tool the guy made himself a few episodes back. It was a proprietary design and function as a hatchet and knife and maybe a few other things all in one. Otherwise, I would take my Busse TGLB, hands down.

jstn, Yeah I remember seeing that thing and I though it was neat too, Good blade choice:thumbup:

Rennd, I was considering taking a Mora Fire Knife to help with the fire situation but I think you get a cooking vessel and a fire starter in the bag they give you:confused:

From what I've seen, all you get is what you ask for. Sometimes stuff is strategically placed throughout the area, though.
Sometimes they have some really terrible stuff. One group just had two machetes, so they didn't manage to complete the challenge.

I wonder if they know what the other person gets to bring? I would want a big knife and a pot. Firestarter would be nice, but I see a lot of groups have a hard time getting water since they cant boil it to make it safe. You can at least attempt to start a fire the old fashion way.

Heavy chopper or a small axe. But without a pot it's hard to boil water.

Someone should make an axe with a small pot on the other end for survivalist kooks.

Tarp...

Most of the weight loss on this show seems to be due to cold/heat stress and lack of sleep rather then BMR or exertion.

Watching that show has really put a lot of gear in perspective for me. Shelter and water are needed on that show way more than any cutting tools. Improvising a waterproof shelter and getting potable water is tough on the cast. The few days they lose while building a shelter and trying to improvise a way to clean water, seem to be the hardest on them and they never really bounce back from that intial shock to their systems. Makes me really want a tarp and a metal pot over most other items. In my own gear I try to keep those lessons in mind so I carry at the very least a metal cup and /or a metal bottle for boiling and a space blanket, large garbage bags, or a tarp is a must. fire is a very close third to those items and after those things are in the kit, I start wondering about knives, axes, and saws. Now if we are talking just about the kcutting tool choices, I'd like an 18inch machete. It's an almost universal cutting tool for the places the show goes to. No specific brand really but something in what is commanly known as a Latin pattern would serve me most anywhere in the tropics I'd think.

They get to pick only one item, and any subsequent gear they scrounge from trash found onsite.

I watch the show just for educational purposes (I've never been to some of the areas they visit), but I find it hard to believe that I would be stranded anywhere naked, and without some resources on my person.

Seeing most on the show can barely survive the embarassment of being naked...

I'd say bring a brain with common sense. If it had to be kit? A Bic lighter.

Knives, axes, and guns were always big trade items with Indians in the early colonial era, but contemporary accounts put blankets and cooking pots at the top of the list. If an established culture clamored for pots, so much more for these TV contestants.

It's funny how some of these people claim to be "survivalist" and the first thing they do is drink stagnant water.

I would bring a Lifestraw! :D
