So I just started watching Naked and Afraid XL and yes I know it's not too popular around here but since Alone is over I figured what the heck something to watch after a Giants game.

Anyway, one of the "survivors", Alyssa, has been using an axe that she brought as her chosen item and I was just wondering what particular axe you guys think it is? Looks a lot like a John Neeman Northlander Forester to me but not sure. Damn good choice if it is.

Not sure what that is. They show it - or anything survival related, to be honest - so infrequently that I can't make it out.

Ok, I think I see the axe now. :) Must be one of those optical illusions.

I've never seen it in use on the show.

The show bothers me, but I watch it on the rare occasion I get to watch TV. Its so unlikely. Why don't they make a long term survival show so that we can see how the shelter, water gathering, etc all evolve.

What about Alone?

"Alone" sort of accomplished that. But, I think Fiddleback is thinking of a show more in line with reality where you have more tools but may not have all the tools you need and you are essentially building a long term place to live with modest means. For example, no power tools.... The naked part on the Naked series(s) just bothers me as I think it's a total gimmick. I see no reason for it. I believe the participants get like $5K for doing it and there is no way I would go through what they do for $5K. The Boonies show isn't too bad.

Like I said, I don't watch much TV. More of a reader, and my kids take up a ton of time. I don't even have cable. So, I haven't seen Alone. I'll try to catch an episode on netflix.

Oh there's definitely a reason for it; if they were clothed would anyone watch that show? :p

There's little about survival; it's mostly about the personal interactions. Some of those folks seem to have almost no skills - and deliberately go into 3 week starvation mode, with virtually no attempt at securing food - so I don't get how they were even chosen. On the few episodes I've seen there are a couple of folks who do appear to know what they're doing, but almost invariably they're matched with a partner who seems to have been chosen specifically because the two might be in conflict. Guess that formula works because the show has been on for a few years now.

There is nothing real, about reality TV. "But, the scenario is contrived! It's not realistic!" Yep. And? The premise of the show is not, "how long can you last with a modest tool set." It's, "survive 21 (or 40) days with 1 survival item per person, a map, and a partner."

Survivor
Survivor Man
Bear Grylls
Dual Survival
Alone
Naked and Afraid
Etc.

None of them are realistic. They are all contrived, scripted, staged, cut and edited, and otherwise packaged for public consumption. If you like them, great. If not, great. There's no use complaining about what is wrong with them and what (someone opines) would make them better. It's like saying "you know what would make this apple better? If it were an orange."

I'd like to know what that big knife is that the guy with the big beard has on the end of that stick is. It's pretty mean and pointy looking with a bit of recurve in it.

They have enough people to have a good chance at an antelope , they could have half the group on one side of a game path the antelope use and half the group on the other side . Everyone has a bola or even two and has practiced , maybe someone would get lucky and tangle the legs of a critter long enough to spear it so it bleeds out . Sure beats sitting around the fire all day .

;) The women seem not very useful but excellent at whining

I might watch if they brought out an all female unblurred version.

:D :D :D

I haven't seen it yet here in Spain but I have seen a few episodes of the regular Naked and Afraid. What bothers ME the most is not having any kind of footwear. As long as the temps are not extreme, I could be fine naked all day. But the footwear... damn.
