Ive always preferred the look of a naked blade, it seems that a lot of traditional knife makers feel the need to write something on the blades. I think it distracts, what are your thoughts?

Nothing on this blade brings out the beauty to me

Do they really need to tell me this is stag?

I have to agree. I much prefer blades with no stamping or etching. I will accept it if the knife is great, or if a patina will cover it on up. But generally not my favorite. I will forgive a small maker mark.

I don't care for blade etching, but the worst of all is all the English on the Böker knives.

There's a Böker knife I like, but I haven't bought it because of the blade etching. I already know what I bought, so why do I need to see the brand name on the blade? I try to be discreet when using my knives in public so nobody sees what's on the blade anyway.

I like mine plain. I also like fewer bells and whistles when it comes to other decorative stuff. If the design of the knife isn't elegant, it's like putting lipstick on a pig. And if the design is elegant, it needs nothing that distracts from that beauty.

I think the majority of knife collectors and probably most enthusiasts as well would agree that naked blades are preferred. Which makes me wonder why so many makers etch their blades. Seems a lot of these knives are more expensive than the average Joe would pay anyway, so why etch blades that are essentially intended for collectors and enthusiasts? Do they think we like it?

I'm not a fan of most etches, but I will say that I do find a lot of the "frosted" blades attractive. Boker's "Tree Brand Classic" comes to mind.

The "$2 Razor" Maher & Grosh etch is probably my favorite of the regular etch styles.

- agreed, certainly not keen on anything on the blade except a patina.

Can't understand either, why makers write anything other than their name or logo.........I mean, Mercedes, Ford, whoever, don't write 'Cars' on their cars

No matter really........at the end of the day, no-one is wrong, and we can all like what we want - choice

Have a great weekend, everyone...

I think un-x-ld knives are rather tasteful, but I also agree. I think it’s like fine clothes: the ones that are well made are not advertising themselves. Then cheap clothes need to show up loud yet are not any more tasteful.
