Naked Castaway on Discovery Channel

I was glad to see that they finally adopted one of my ideas for a survival show.

However, I had suggested Kate Upton for the starring role, not another ex-military dude.

Leave it to the Discovery Channel to ruin a great idea....

I'm not watching this one. I enjoy the "survival" type shows, but one must draw the line somewhere. No twig and berries for me, thanks.

In a way I liked the show. He too seems to jump on the bandwagon or survival show. But atlist there isn't much drama between two guys. Or survival experts who seem to find food and water and know which way is the best way to the village in the middle of a jungle. Which everyone seem to find in 2-3 days. Or you see someone who trys and creat as much drama excitment in the show to suck in more viewers. For now I do like him as he seems to follow Les idea and there isn't much drama and you can see him try diffrent technics for fire and shelter. In one segment you could see on the cave wall baskets that he made to hold things. We would see how he does on the later shows. But survival shows seem to be hot with discovery for now.. It a more intresting show to watch then the Dual Survival show. Where you got two guys spend more time PMSing at each other then anything. Yes It's not just Joe who try and do the drama thing with sparta and mounting the pig looking around as if Big Foot going to run up to him and steal it. But also Cody who always finds something wrong with anything Joe has to say or do. When Joe brings food he starts to complain about no fire to cook it.:jerkit:
Wish Les gets more shows on the poop tube... I still think Andrew Zimmerman would be a great guy to join him on one of those shows. So Les won't go hungry for the week.

I watched it and thought it was okay. There was too much man butt in the first half, but once he made his grass skirt, it was a little easier to watch. I like the camera style though, like Les does which makes it feel more like a true survival show.

Saw the preview for this, didn't the same guy or some guy who looks like the host go up the amazon for like 2 years?

I had the same thought and I think you're correct. He and a native guide trekked across S. America. I think his friend had a bigger role in him finishing his trek because his friend did all the food gathering as well as the heavy lifting.

I found his castaway first episode interesting - he has that crazed British punker/skinhead look but I guess he was a soldier once and therefore reasonably fit.
I suspect his survival skill level will be obvious by the next episode and we'll find he was not as prepared skill-wise as he could have been, especially in a comparatively benign tropical environment.

Since I like watching such shows, it's better than nothing.

Ill watch it just because its ed. He crossed the amazon

I liked it. It seems like the best survival type show on at the moment. I think he could have made a concession for a pair of swim trunks though.

The only thing I questioned was how did the goats get on the island and where do they get their drinking water?

That's what I thought as well. Seems he could just follow hoof prints to water. They're getting it from somewhere and they look better off then he does. :D

Careful - you're dangerously close to poking through the veneer of realism that these male soap-operas strive to maintain. :D

I didn't watch the show, but Ed is a pretty interesting dude. His book about his walk along the length of the Amazon river is pretty cool. I just can't imagine walking 4000 miles through mountains and jungle for entertainment...

I liked the parts of the show I have seen, as it shows all the mistakes a person make if he is not familiar with the environment. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Western Samoa, I lived in a very similiar environment and I know that a person can live very comfortably there IF he has knowledge and skills. I was allowed to live with a Samoa family and to see some of their life.

Any competent villager from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and other Pacific Islands would find living on the island not much of a challenge, especially if he had a bush knife, mosquito net and a few other basic tools. The Pacific Islander would also be able to start a fire within an hour of being "castaway". The Pacific Islander would easily find food on the reef and would eat well. Of course, the Pacific Islander would not be "surviving", he would simply be living.

It was OK, but this guy always seems to be getting behind in stuff.

He may or may not be. But, cramming 2-months of footage into three one-hour episodes is exactly what we needed.

I didn't feel like Ed was beating on one thing for a whole hour like EVERY other "survival" show does.

Ed's emotions were so much more believable too. If anything, he might have learned how NOT to do a "survival" show from all those other "wankers".

I watched his Amazon special years back. He's not your typical "drama-queen survivalist". He's a go-getter with end goal in mind no matter how much it batters him physically.

Not even 3 hours. Subtract commercial time and it only adds up to 2 hours of footage. I was glad they didn't drag it out for an 8 week series. Good show. I enjoyed it.
