in addition to new boots, i also want to pick up a new nalgene bottle. any recommendations on a good one. i'd probably only be using it for day hikes. no more than 10 to 12 miles.

I use my "Everyday" 1L nalgene every day and it works. I've dropped it a bunch of times with no issue. I do want one of the SS ones.

With all the huppla on SS bottles, I just can't bring myself to spend $30 on a water bottle. The cheap SS bottles should be avoided (with experience) as they aren't standardized to normal water bottle holders and cups should you go with a system.

For myself, I prefer a good old plastic, wide-mouth nalgene bottle. Actually, I like the soft plastic ones that go for about $7 the best. I use them in combination with a GI-cup for cooking or my snow peak soloist cookset that all nest together in the water bottle holder.

Nalgene is a company name not a type of plastic !! The older 'nalgene' bottles were "evil" polycarbonate which I'm perfectly happy with but they do have a newer replacement plastic . Other than that stick to SS.

Either get the stainless steel guyot which you can put directly over / into the fire to boil liquids or the newer bpa free tritan bottle.
If you go the plastic route don't forget the GSI nesting cup, you will be good to go either way.

There are some nice options out there.

The stainless steel Guyot/Nalgene Standard is an awesome bottle. You can cook with it over a fire if needed. Accessory compatibility is excellent.

The Nalgene 32oz Everyday Wide Mouth bottle is pretty much the standard by which all water bottles are judged. Accessory compatibility is excellent. A good tough Eastman Tritan plastic bottle.

There is also the new GSI DukJug. It's a lot like the Nalgane Everyday, but it is made of a new plastic called Infinity. It promises to be 25% lighter and more durable than "other BPA free plastics", It has some nice refinements like a duct tape holder built into the side of the bottle, an included splash guard, and a cap that can be opened while wearing mittens or gloves.

Personally, I believe that any of these options requires a Human Gear capCAP, unless you like water spilled all over the front of you. It may not be as necessary for the DukJug, as it's splash guard appears to work surprisingly well.

Tritan and Infinity both tend to hold a smell in my testing. I'd only use these bottles for water, unless you prefer the smell of gatorade or lemonade or whatever the next time you go to use the bottle for water. If you really want to get the smell out, a mixture of baking soda and water left in the freezer overnight seems to get the annoying odors out.

All three of these bottles will fit a GSI Glacier cup and any back country water filter.

For more choices, you may consult my Guide To Water Bottles. It is rather comprehensive. The DukJug is not in there yet, as I am still testing it.

Just a side note, if you use a Nalgene bottle as an emergency/tent toilet, rinsing it out when you are off trail with a liquid laundry soap kills the stink quickly.

I like the standard Nalgene bottle, but does anyone know of a similar sturdy bottle with a bottle wide mouth? I would like to use the bottle for carrying kit, but the rim limits ease of filling and removing objects.
Plastic peanut butter jars are good, but I prefer a sturdier material.

I prefer a bladder like a camelbak

it is more comfortable to carry, 3x the water capacity, and less likely to hurt you if you fall (I fall a lot)

Guyot/Nalgene SS are awesome! Perfect for EDC/Day hikes :)

If get a wide mouth bottle, I highly recommend the Guyot Splash Guard, for only a couple bucks it's a great investment.

As other have said. The Guyot/Nalgene SS bottle. However DO NOT buy them until you can get a good coupon code for the Nalgene site. When I purchase mine I got 2 for the price of 1 and free shipping.

I would not pee in my bottle. Bring something to pee in if you're in a tent in an arctic/snow environment.

In your guide, you talk about the SIGG being shaped like a mosque, but then show it next to a picture of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, which is Russian Orthodox... :D Big difference!

That's what I get for using Google!!!!! :foot:
