A lot of people carry a 32 oz. Nalgene wide mouth water bottle anyway. It seems to me the addition of a Nalgene compass closure and Olicamp space saver mug (for emergency cooking) is a reasonable step toward preparedness (people take their water bottle on side trips when they leave other things behind).

Does anyone here own/use the compass closure? I have one on order for each family-member's bottle, but they aren't here yet.

P.S. Nalgene's site offers pretty good direct pricing and free shipping.

Wow, Diletante you are the Nalgene man!:D
No skimping on reliability or quality, those compass tops are Brunton too! Tell us how they work out, also thank you for the tips;)

I actually got one of those compass lids for the liter size nalgenes for free. I have been at a Marriot Residence Inn for the summer, the housekeepers accidentally melted the lid on my nalgene. When I got home from work there was the compass lid on my old bottle and also a brand new bottle besides. That is what I call customer service. That was the first I had seen or heard of them. I guess they are not dishwasher safe though, so I am saving it for hiking.

Great idea. Now attach a whistle on the loop that holds the lid to the Nalagene bottle and you are set. IMHO the whistle is an absolutely essential piece of gear. Of course you could take this idea to extremes and have all kinds of stuff hanging off your bottle, but the whistle is light and would hardly be noticed.

Wow! The day before I read this I was putting away the stuff from our last hike and I used a split ring to attach each child's whistle to their waterbottle/compas/cup package.
