Nalgene collapsible canteens?

Bear Claw,

I don't have any experience with the collapsible Nalgene but I am a huge fan of the Platy bottles.

God bless,
Adam

Not worth a CRAP!!! I bought 2 of the collapsible Nalgene gallon size & both leaked in a week! Save yourself some time & aggrivation. Either go with Platypus bottles or MSR dromedary bags. You'll be much happier with either choice.

I have both Nalgene and Platy. The Nalgene has the full size cap which prevents it from rolling up compactly. The Platy has the small push/pull cap which I like better when it is empty and stowed in my pack.

My Platypus bottles are starting to delaminate and spring leaks . . . After nearly 15 years of regular use. I will be replacing them with the same.

FYI, regular soda bottle caps can fit a platypus in a pinch. I have one that I perforated for use as a "shower."

Thanks folks, I finally last night managed to find the right google terms to find some reviews on some backpacking sites and these got feedback similar to what Bowmann1911 says, lots of complaint of seams giving out, the hard plastic rim of the mouth damaging the bag and handles coming off with barely any use.

i've been using one for a year now and have no complaints except you can't roll it up near as small as the platy bottles. i have a couple of them and they are also great.

I have yet to test the Nalgene ones, however I do like most features on the Platypus. My understanding is that most people prefer the latter over Nalgene when it comes to collapsible containers (Don't really know why, I do love most Nalgene bottles)

This is the only review I've come across on the collapsible Nalgenes.

I have both the Nalgene and Platypus versions. I like both but I think I prefer the Platypus just a slight bit and I can't pinpoint an exact reason especially since I usually prefer wide mouth containers to the converse but the platypus just "feels" better to me.

Platypus bottles last forever but they can pick up a smell/taste but otherwise the are darn nice and don`t cost all that much. It is nice to be able to go somewhere with 10 gallons of water and come back with a pocket full of empty containers. I have no experience with nalgene collapsible containers sorry.

Somebody mentioned the MSR Dromedary bags up above. I have one of the early ones that is about 15 years old. From the beginning mine imparts a nasty taste to the water. I Learned that that was a problem with the first gen ones. I use it for wash and cooking water rather than drinking. Mine has sprung a couple of leaks too, which I fixed. Maybe the newer ones are improved.

I have both. I have used the nalgene longer. Nice thing is that it works well with my katadyn water filter. Yes, the large opening prevents it from rolling up small, but that isn't a major concern. The platy is well made and does roll up smaller. I like both. These are eventually going to break down with wear/tear. Some of the other posters complain of that, but it's not meant as a fully fledged replacement of a normal nalgene bottle. After some time, spend the 10-20 bucks and just buy a new one. Simple as that. It'd be great for survival gear, back up water bladder.

I read somewhere that rolling them up is what makes them delaminate. If you keep them flat they last longer. I think I read that on the Platy packaging or something. I keep mine flat and have had them for years without problems.
