I was thinking about picking up some of the large mouthed bottles to take to the pool. I'm getting beer'd out and was thinking about making up margaritas and mojitos to take to the Friday Happy Hour at our neighborhood pool.

Is it ok to carry alcohol in Nalgene PC bottles? Their website didn't mention this.

I ask because people on this forum seem to know a few things about these bottles and some - have made me question their use.

Polycarbonate is going to be fine with alcohol, especially with the mostly water mixed drinks like you are making.

I never had a problem with any of mine. A Nalgene would make an excellent bottle to bring whiskey along for camping. You won't lose you booze when you drunkenly knock the bottle over and it lands on a rock.

Lexan bottles are good for this type of thing. Especially as noted with a mixed drink and the lower alcohol content.

Nalgene actually makes a Lexan whiskey flask. ;)

Actually, it's not Lexan. It's PET, the same material that is used in soda bottles (only much thicker.) I have one which I use as a pocket water bottle. It holds 12 oz., and weighs practically nothing.

Repeating an earlier comment of mine - Nalgene is a brand name not a type of plastic !!! The Nalgene company makes containers of different plastics ,polycarbonate is just one of them !!

When I picked one up, it sure felt like the stuff my good bottles are made from. Maybe the the cup is from the good stuff and the flask is from the weaker stuff that picks up flavors and odors.

The blue outer shell is a hard (polycarbonate?) plastic. The inner clear part is PET. It's safe for alcohol. As far as I know, it doesn't hold tastes or smells.

just came across this thread. That's great!! Thanks!! I just ordered 6 flasks for myself and to give to friends. The plastic will be great for a tank bag (after arriving at destination of course) , no glass to break and holds more than my SS flask. And can be kept filled for extended time frames... very cool and thanks
