I was at Gander mountain today and I saw a Nalgene brand shoulder sling. I thought it woul dbe good for small hikes/general outdoor stuff, but the sling looked like it was poorly made. Does anybody know of any pouches that can "sling" a nalgene? I'm even open to "home made" ideas.

I bought a stainless mug from bepreparedtosurvive.com it's called the stainless alpine mug it fits neatly over the bottom of the nalgene, I wrapped an elastic (piece of bike innertube) around the nalgene about midway up and slipped the lip of the mug underneath to secure it to the nalgene (works like a charm) than I took enough paracord to loop diagonally acroos my body, doubled it up, attatched a carabiener and attatched that to the connectot piece of the nalgen lid..the whole thing works great and cost about 8 bucks to make now where ever I go i have a nalgene, a mug for boiling water, and a bout 10 feet of parcord

I am thinking about making myself a leather possibles bag, but buying leather from craft stores is a ridiculously expensive proposition. It's not that I can't afford it. It just completely chaps my hide, so to speak, to pay premium dollars for what are basically useless scraps. So I widened my search. At Harbor Freight, I found suede welding sleaves for ~$10, if memory serves. Much better deal than the the craft stores offer. If I can't find anything better, I will buy a set of those guys and make a bag or two out of the welding sleaves. Maybe you can find a similar deal near you, or of course a leg from a pair of blue jeans could be modified - another option I am considering. Hope that helps. FYI Harbor Freight, also has a sewing awl w/heavy thread for ~$4-5. If you have one in your area, I'd say it's definitely worth the trip.

Got a pic?

Myakka,

After one of your last posts I ended up ordering the maxpedition devildog....can't wait.

The only two Nalgene pouches that our area carries are the pouch with attached belt and a beltless pouch with velcro belt loop. Made OK and can be slung by adding a strap.

I ended up buying a USGI 2qt. canteen with shoulder slung pouch.

Check out this link to make a paracord waterbottle sling. I have used this to make a sling to carry my NATO 58 canteen and mug.

That's pretty slick. Looks like it would be easy to attach other small pieces of gear to that as well, either under the "net" or tied to it. I know what I'm going to be doing after dinner tonight. . . Playing with para cord and a water bottle.

The quickest and easiest way to accomplish this is with 2 knots - the jug sling (see links below) and the Asher's equalizer (which I couldn't find a link to, so if you're interested, I'll draw it in Paint for you)

I use these knots all the time to carry 2 litre pop bottles.

Thanks guys. I actually broke down and bought the Nalgene brand carrier. I'm still going ot make the net thing for something to do tonight.

I'm going to do the jug not for tomorrow at the water park so my bottle won;t look so tempting to thieves when I leave it at the entrance of the ride.

Make your own! Cheap, cheap, cheap...

I just remembered awhile back a fellow forum member and myself were discussing knots off-forum and I had done a quickee drawing of the Asher's equalizer at that time, so here it is:

I did it in 2 parts for uploading to Photobucket. In one of Budworth's knot books, he describes the Asher's equalizer: "This cunning knot, added to a jug/pitcher, jar or bottle sling, adjusts loop lengths automatically to give two handles the same size, which make carrying the object much easier."

Please ignore the spelling of 'theyh' in step 2. I'll have to correct that.

For A leather Bag...try a second hand thrift store and spot a leather hand bag or shoulder bag...with a little work it can make a great "Man Purse"!
