Hi. My name is Muhammed and I am from South Africa. This is my first post, so please forgive me if I broke any house rules.

I purchased a set of 4 really old sharpening stones online. I have no idea what type of stone this is, nor has the seller had any clue. I did not pay much for it, and was prepared to accept the associated risks.

Is it possible to identify the stones by viewing these images?

The little white one is a translucent Arkansas. The butterscotch colored one with the large wood base may also be a translucent. If the surfaces are similar hold a flash light against it and see if it passes light. I suspect the big brown is a man made oil stone of some sort. The one in the middle that is broke I can't even venture a guess on just the one picture.

Hi. Thanks for the replies.

The small white one does allow light to pass through it.

The butterscotch one is newer and firmly glued to the base, but feels similar to the broken one, that also allows light to pass.

The above 3 have a similar texture.

The orange one is clearly man made, does not allow light to pass and a bit difficult to clean.
