I can't remember how many years ago I bought it,in fact I can't even seem to find it right now you know how that goes. It had a blade very much like the sog bowie and rubber handle. For some reason they made the handle very thin,I always planned on making a leather stack but never got around to it. Anyone remember it,name, type of steel? Thanks

Anyone know if someone made a traditional leather stack handle for one. Was wondering about tang shape and new pommel attachment.

The early Cold Steel UWK, model 38UWC was black Carbon V steel blade and made in USA.
The later ones were model 38LUWC was satin Krupp 4116 stainless and made in China.
There was also a version with a Bead Blasted Aus8 stainless blade made in Taiwan.
But I am not sure of the chronological sequence of the latter two.

Great update
but very sad at the same time ...

IIRC for a while the "420 sub-zero quench"line was sold alongside the Carbon V line, though I'm not sure if this specific knife was part of it.

At the time you could buy the Kobun in either steel.

Not buying a Carbon V Kobun was one of the dumber things I did relating to not buying a CS product.

The Carbon V knives were coated and the 420 sub-zero quench knives were bead-blasted while the AUS8 knives were satin. I don't think AUS8 versions of the knives were made during the time period 420 sub-zero quench versions of the same knives were made but some were still available for sale.

Thanks for the replies but I've searched for it to no avail. It had a black blade so that bums me out that is was a USA carbon v. It may have been in a box of knives I lost in a burglary years ago. That box also contained a 1970's Gerber mkii and a Tommi EH puuko😢 I did find a Kershaw 1006 I forgot I had,so that's something.

The Cold Steel web site has a page with all their old catalogs. It might take a while, but start flipping through and you should find it eventually.

Thanks,I may have to check that out but I fear that it will make me feel too nostalgic.

The Cold Steel UWK does pop up for sale every now and then. Are you looking to buy one?
I am not. Was hoping to find the one I had. As I mentioned the handle was very thin for some reason on that model,at least it seemed to feel that way. Felt much thinner than say an SRK. That's why my plan was to make a leather stack handle for it like the originals.

Goccha.

Been looking for a Carbon V UWK for a while myself. I think CS did a really good version of the "original". They sure are tough to find complete with box, sheath, etc... I have seen a few on an auction site that were good knives but incomplete. The do come up but they seem to fetch a good price, or they get listed for way to much and sit there forever.

Good luck!
