Recieved this from my brothers late father inlaw anyone know who makes it? Seems like a nice splitter, quite heavy
EHL
GHL
CHI....
???

Cteve,i'm not a collector, and absolutely do not concern myself with identifying tools by manufacturer.

However,i can tell you that this splitting-maul(in effect) is based on the type of a German axe known as the Bavarian pattern.Bayerische Axt, also sometimes referred to as Münchner Form.

Possibly, were you to look that up i'd guess that you'll find tons of different manufacturers....Axes like this have been very common in the US box-stores for decades,it seems....

Hey Chesterfieldfox,

I know this is ancient now, but did you ever find anymore info about this?

I have the same one and was asking about it on reddit. They pointed me to this old thread. Here it is on reddit.

I think it might be the Garant Super Splitter. But the current ones don't seem to have that stamp, so not really sure.

Thanks. I've been trying to track down the GHL stamp and the best I have is that it is G. Hjukstrom Ltd, an importer based in Surrey, BC, Canada, still going and still importing axes. They have had their own line in the past, according to Axe Makers of North America by Allan Klenman who says: "[Gransfors] are actually manufacturers of the West Coast's popular label BLACK KING from the wholesale of Gus Hjukstrom." Garant has sold this style for a long time in Canada so I am guessing that G Hjukstrom imported them with a GHL stamp and Garant sold them with their own paper label. Currently the ones that Garant sells are made in India. I have an older one that is stamped "USM", so may have been made in the States.

I just got this message from the president of G. Hjukstrom:
"Hi Xxxxxx
This came up once before and to the best of our knowledge our company did not stamp any axes with GHL.
I had the honor of meeting Allan Klenman who visited us several times and signed his books for us.
Mr Hjukstrom used to purchase from Granfors and later Wetterlings under the Black Label that we no longer use." The president is with the company for over 38 years, with 30 of those years with Gus Hjukstrom. So that rules out GH...
