Thanks

..The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud "Spirit of Ecstasy" bends forward with wings not bending backwards like above....having said that if one owned a Rolls Royce there would likely be much of both.......!
Likely to be one of your Airline or Shipping motifs?.....perhaps Esther Williams promoting something?...very interesting as she does look familiar...Hoo Roo

Howie,
Good find!
Ive e-mailed the owner of the page.
Lets see what happens.
Thanks

From Ken at the web site. More clues to work with!

I don't have any real information on your knife, but guess that the knife
might be a Piston Ring Company advertising piece. The girl figure I have was
originally mounted on a chrome ashtray and was set on the parts counters for
Auto Parts houses such as Western Auto to bring customer attention to the
Piston Ring engine products.

More info from Ken today.
History:

SPX began in 1912 as the Piston Ring Company, an auto parts maker. In 1931, the company's name was changed to Sealed Power Corporation. Our current name was adopted in 1988. The S and P in SPX Corporation represent the first initials of the words Sealed Power. The X was referred to as the Exponent of Excellence.

I've sent an e-mail to SPX asking for more info.

Chasing the history is fun. Sometimes it leads down some really interesting paths. Stories these knives can tell us :D

A little more info on the Piston Ring Girl
http://www.trademarkia.com/logo-73259653.html

Looks pretty darn close
Picture was trademarked 4/25/1980 - Would have expected 1935 not 1980
The USPTO has given the trademark serial number of 73259653. The current federal status of this trademark filing is CANCELLED - SECTION 8.

Thank you all for the great images and interesting history.

You are excellent and thorough researchers.

I am always amazed by the knowledge, experience and unrelentingly thorough research on this forum.

Tom sent me the Trademark. We were all on target and he thanks us all.
Now we need to find the knife.

I've been checking the status on BladeForums: it's amazing the research the forum folks are doing.
The latest post referenced a trademark for a similar lady - she is without a doubt the figure on my knife.
I found the actual trademark registration on the USPTO site at http://tmportal.uspto.gov/external/...ue&details=&SELECT=US+Serial+No&TEXT=73259653

And I downloaded a copy of the registration photo - it is attached and you will see how she matches the one on my knife. The trademark registration says the logo was first used in commerce February, 1980 and the actual trademark registration was issued September, 1981.

So that tells us the earliest date of the knife. The registration was cancelled in 2002, so that brackets the dates. This is much more consistent with the condition of the knife.

Maybe you could post this update, the photo, and my thanks on BladeForums - I have not yet registered.

Also, did you get a chance to post any of the other knifes? I'm not sure how to search for them.

Many thanks,
Tom

Toms Notes
Photo1
I think this is a style 234K, serpentine (butter/molasses?), 1946-1958
Length: 3 ¼” closed, 5 ¾” open
Blades: 1 3/8 and 2 1/8
Markings: Schrade Walden, N.Y. U.S.A., with 234K on reverse

Photos 2a, 2b
Length: 3” closed, 5 ¼” open
Blades: 1 ¼ and 2
Markings: Schrade Cut Co. Walden N.Y. (on both blades)

Photos 3a, 3b
This knife looks almost gun-metal blue. I think it might be nickel plated or a nickel alloy.
Length: 2 7/8” closed, 6 3/8” open
Blades: 1 ½, manicure 1 ½
Markings: Schrade Cut Co Walden N.Y., other side of blade has the numbers 80 over 200

Photos 4a, 4b
I think I have seen this one identified as a Muskrat – is that the general style or the specific model?
Length: 4” closed, 9 ¾” open
Blades: 2 5/8 each
Markings: Schrade, Walden N.Y. U.S.A., plus it has the number 040 on the bolster (I could not get a very good photo of this)

Photo 5
Length: 2 ¾” closed, 5 7/8” open
Blades: 1 1/8, 1 5/8, manicure 2
Markings: Schrade Cut Co, Walden N.Y. on both blades

Photo 6
This one says “1/20 10K GFP” on the fob
Length: 2 ¾” closed, 5 3/8” open
Blades: 1, 1 3/8 and manicure 2
Markings:
> Large blade says “Stainless Steel, Schrade, Walden N.Y.”
> Small blade says on one side Stainless, with an illegible number etched below, and Schrade, Walden N.Y. on the other side

Photo 7
This one is a model 865 (665?) which I guess is one of their advertising models. What is really puzzling me is the engraving on it – it looks like a woman, with flowing hair (blonde in my mind), either soaring in the wind or preparing to dive. At first I thought it was the Rolls Royce hood ornament, but it isn’t. So I’m still trying to identify this mystery woman.
Length: 3” closed, 7 ¼” open
Blades: 1 3/8, 1 5/8 and manicure 2
Markings: Large blade says Schrade Walden N.Y. U.S.A. on one side and 865 (B65, 665?) Stainless on the other side.
