Here's an old Imperial with a really funky blade. Does anyone know what it's use is? (The knife isn't mine. It's just one I ran across online.)

Total guess here:

I think it's for threading a machine. Looks like a hole in the end and a slot to slide a thread in?

I noticed that too and it's a good guess but what machine? Why the weird bend? It looks like it's concave on one side and convex on the other. A thread, string or wire could indeed be run through the hole and then contained within the concave blade.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike

IMHO, you need to ask Bernard on this one. I can't see it being useful on a weaving loom and too slow for a sail mender.

I thought I would try here first but BRL forum is my next stop. Good call. My Mom used to weave and I thought of the shuttle thingy she used to draw the thread back and forth too but I agree that it still seems "wrong" for this purpose.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If i am not mistaken this is a "reed" hook. It was used to pull yarn through the reed in a weaving machin/knitting machine.

I'm a sailmaker and haven't seen a tool like this but I do believe it's for picking up a thread. We had a device for getting a line through the luff band on sails that my master called a mouse. The line pulled through the luff band was then tied to a rope or wire which was then pulled through the luff band. The luff BTW is the leading edge of sails. This knife could actually work as a mouse.

Best regards

Robin
