I want to take this little guy apart and clean it. what's the fastener at the far left called? there's another on the back - does it require a second "Mystery Tool" to keep it still? any good workarounds?

happy to repay the favor if you need me to identify body parts, like the frenulum, glabella, or epiploic appendage . . .😶

Its a tamperproof spanner screw.

Take a paper clip make a U out of it. Then hold the U firmly in the jaws of a pair of heavy linesman pliers. With just the 2 nubs sticking out.

Or:

Make a cut straight across with a hacksaw or a cut off wheel then use a slotted screw driver.

A bench grinder is certainly useful, but you could modify a screwdriver or snap ring pliers just as well with a vise and a file or hacksaw. It’d be slower, but less likely to grind off too much too quick.

Spanner.

They make 4mm bits for everything, including spanners. 4mm bits are thankfully pretty cheap and easy to get. You will need two of the correct size spanner bits and two 4mm bit drivers to hold them. If you don't have two bit drivers, some people will use something like a clamp or a vise to hold the second bit.

aha! like in john lennon's 1965 book, "A Spaniard in the Works." thanks for the wikipedia link!

great. now to measure it a & figure out which bit size. seems like overkill to spend $20 on tools to clean a $10 gerber EAB, but hey: i end up with new tools, which is always good!!

hold on - i just had a stroke of brilliance/stupidity - the corn on the cob at yesterday's BBQ reminded me of this
