Name your favorite scales!!

i call mine "Jim." Is that what you were asking?? :D

i know that micarta (or synthetic) is supposed to be more durable, but there is something about the feel (and look) of wood that i prefer. Wait...how do i say that without being ridiculed? oh well.

i am also not a fan of the stabilized woods. again, i know they are supposed to be "better", but they don't feel the same to me.

Continuing on with my ultra-wordy answer....my preference is (Arizona) Desert Ironwood. Also, i know it's not quite as durable, but i really like the looks of Tiger Maple.

Favorites? Hmmmmm....

Canvas Micartas, dark hardwoods like Cocobolo, Wenge, Rosewood, etc.

Not a huge fan of how G10 feels by itself, I like texture in a handle.

I haven't had a chance to play with Ironwood yet but from what I have seen of other makers work, I would enjoy it.

I like contrast so I'll often laminate some light and dark G10 under the wood eg. 1/4" Cocobolo, .060 White G10, 1/8" Black G10.

I'm a fan of desert ironwood and cocobolo. Synthetic materials are ok, but every piece of wood is different and unique and I like that.

Highly feathered crotch walnut is my favorite. I really am starting to like cocobolo, ziricote, and bocote. The perfect handle for me is unstabilized wood with a nice tru oil finish. It just feels better.

Oddly enough, I love micarta. Not a fan of G10 though. The knives I make for myself all have some type of micarta on them. I also dig burlap micarta. I like Desert Ironwood, Bocote, Stabilized spalted Maple and Tiger Maple. Sycamore is also a killer if it's the right piece. Mesquite is one of my favorites, but it can be harder than Desert Ironwood to find good pieces.

Burlap micarta,(it's getting hard to find, but you could make your own),canvas micarta, linen micarta or wood over micarta/G10 liners.
Cocobolo & Ironwood for the woods.

I prefer ood for most knives. Spalted maple, any figured walnut, curly maple. G10 is great if it has some texture to it.

My personal favorite is walnut burl. But I am good with any walnut really. can you tell?
