If you only had one choice and money wasn't an issue, who in your opinion would you say has mastered specific steels in HT and overall superior quality and why?

Example:
80crv2 Daniel Winkler

CPM-3v Fehrman Knives

1095 - Rowen/Esee

My 154 CM from Microtech has performed better than the 154 CM from other manufacturers' knives that I have used.

cpm-154 strider

This is a steel I have used on many knives, mid techs mostly.

The Strider heat treat would keep the most amazing edge and take one hell of a beating. Hands down.

Get ready---- O1 Kevin Mad dog (brain child) Mcclung. Sweet lines, ergos are awesome, looks are clean and me likey and they cut, cut and keep cut. As a bonus he has beautiful daughters :)

I'm very happy with the S35VN on the ZT 0550. The balance of properties (edge retention, ease of maintenance, corrosion resistance) has been great. I have no experience with M390, CTS XHP, or a couple other steels, but I don't feel a need to chase greener grass for the sake of doing so.

CPM 3V and CPM 20CV from Survive! Knives for my fixed blades (Peter's Heat Treat)

My Southern Grind Bad Monkey's 14C28N has been exceptional

Dozier does a nice job with d2 in harder use knives. Queen does great things with d2 in the traditional world. Among the powder steels I like the way that s90 performs as treated by Benchmade. With both queen and Benchmade I don't look at absolute edge holding, but all factors like ease of sharpening, etc.

1095 full flat grind from '60's Schrade-Walden fixed blade hunter. - Superb overall performance/toughness and corrosion resistance.
D-2 from DPx HEST folder. -Toughness/edge holding. Remarkably corrosion resistant for all the RUMOR on how D-2 will rust. This hasn't.
154 CM from original Masters of Defense folder. -Corrosion resistance/keen edge taking.
VG-10 of my Gryphon M-10 fixed blade. -Ease of sharpening yet holds edge well.

Runner Up: G-2 steel of my '90's Benchmade Panther. -has stayed incredibly sharp and corrosion free since then.

If you're wondering where the trendy, fashionable "super steels" are in this list, I don't consider any of my higher end steels (S30V and "up") to be 'exceptional' as their cost leads me to EXPECT exceptional steel--so nothing 'remarkable' about them.

Looking forward to trying the new Carpenter steel from Cold Steel, probably on a Ti-Lite.
