I was reading the book We Seven a while back. Its about the Mecury space program and it mentioned a custom knife that NASA had made for their astronauts. They took it with them in the spacecraft to use in emergencies.

Im just curious so if anyone has a picture or some info I would apreciate it. Also is that knife still made or do any other companies make something similar?

Sounds like you're talking about the Randall Model # 17 "Astro"; I believe it was the knife designed by Bo Randall and Gordo Cooper for the Mercury program. You might want to check out the Randall Made Knives site; I'm sure they'd have more info.I've had one of these knives for a few years and they're great blades (kinda nice piece of history, too).

Ranall made and still offers the model 17 astro. This knife was especially designed for the seven Project Mercury astronauts, who carried them on America's first manned space flights.

I just read an article in a knife magazine where they found the knife in Liberty Bell 7 and were restoring it.

A Few years ago I went over to the Randal shop in Orlando. One of the "Mercury Seven" astronauts original knife was on display in the showroom (sorry, can't remember which astronaut). I thought that it was pretty cool.
