Any advice for someone have surgery on Wedneday for removing nasal polyps?

For the first time in my life I'm getting put out for a procedue. (I'm 41) They're going to do somehting called Stealth Surgery, where the strap my head down and put it in a CAT scan machine, to know where their tools are while they're roto-rootering my sinus's out.

My martial arts class is meeting that night and I've already let the teacher know I won't be there. He said I might be able to be there, but he's the guy who cheked himself out of the hospital (from dizzy spells) to come teach class one night.

The doc said it's out-patient, but when I went to the hospital for pre testing, they said to pack an overnight bag, just in case. I've applied for FMLA and STD though work so I'm scheduled off from Wednesday until Tuesday the next week (but told them if I get bored and feel up to it, I might return Monday. The doc said I'd probably be okay for Monday, but to see how I'm doing.)

I'll be happy just to breath though my nose again (and for it to stop running like a garden hose).

I'm in the process now of possibly getting sinus surgery. I had a deviated septum fixed 5 years ago but now I have some other things that are causing problems. I'm in need of having my passages opened up and my turbinates reduced in size. The only advice I can give is to follow your doctor's instructions afterwards to the letter. It will definitely help you out in the long run.

Ugh , good luck man... Just thinking about that makes me nose hurt.
My Brother had it done last year , was no big deal - in and out in a few hours and now he can breathe much easier at night.

God Bless.

The heck with your MA class and what the teacher says. You can go there anytime. Do what your doctor says, like Ken said above. I doubt you'll feel like doing anything but going home and laying down, which is an excellent idea.

I need nasal surgery bad. I can barely breathe through my nose at the best of times. Deviated septum, been broken several times, etc.

had it in December, over a year ago, you won't feel like doing much, if they fixing a deviated septum the splints are miserable for the time they are in, follow docs orders, and be prepared to have a nose bleed for about 3 days. Good luck to ya, also sleep in as close to an upright position as you can.

Just had my dev. septum fixed about a month ago.No problem, got cut on friday the next day me and the boys had the forge fired up.Worst part was the medication, had a bad reaction and was sick for a week. But I can breath again now.

Take a deep breath and hold it for three days.

Unsympathetic and sarcastic comments aside, my nasal surgery for a forcefully deviated septum was briefly uncomfortable but no real problem.

Unfortunately, it didn't improve my looks much.

Well, the surgery's over... (an update if anyone's interested)

As they were getting me ready (I think they'd already introduced the first anestetic to the IV, when one of the people asked what I was going in for (a last double check, I think). I said "Roto-Rooter", she asked where, I told her "Wherever ya want!" They all chuckled and told me I'd better pick a spot, as they could start anywhere! :D

I ended up being in surgey for 2 hours, then my oxygen level was extremely low, so they kept me overnight for observation. First thing I remember when waking up is raising my hand to tell someone I was gonna hurl. Didn't even get my hand all the way up and I barfed all over myself. Then they put an oxygen thingie on that covered my chin and kept my O2 level up. I was glad to spend the night though... I don't know if I could have walked very far unless I really had to. The wife told me that they had me on morphine for a while, and I know they kept antibiotics in my IV. Only thing I didn't like was the oxygen mask thing had to have water in it. If the water level got low, it sounded like bongo drums (with the sound coming right up the tube into my face). That woke me up more than once.

The doc told me that out of 100 people, 99 go home that day... I was the "lucky" one I guess.:D He also took before and after pics (but they're gross, so I'm not sharing)

Came home at noon the next day; I'd never eaten a thing while I was there. The wife started harping on me to eat something, but I had no appetite what-so-ever (I think that was affected by the drainage down the back) I ate some crackers and drank a little water, but had no desire to eat anything. They'd also rolled up a gauze pad and taped it under my nose to catch blood and stuff (so I had a huge, white mustache which reminded me of some of the photoshopped pics of Glockman from W&C!)

Yesterday I went back to my doctor's office so he could remove the packing (another thing he said he wouldn't do unless he needed to(the packing, not the removing)) This is kinda gross, but it felt like he pulled a hard-boiled egg out of each nostril! :barf: Then he sprayed some stuff up there and told me that it would sting a bit when the air hit where the packing was... That was the most painful part of the whole process. Every time they asked me my pain level at the hospital, I was 1-2 or 2-3. The upper part of the back of my mouth hurt more than anything, and I bet that was from the tube. My nose felt like the chlorine burn from a swimming pool; not good, but not real bad either. But, after the packing was out, it felt like a small fire inside my nose for a while.

After the doc pulled the packing out, he told me to breathe through my nose... It felt like the inside of my nose was the size of a basketball! And... I could breathe! The packing didn't bother me one bit, because that was what I'd been used to for more than a year. It still feels odd not to have to open my mouth to breathe. The doc gave me a nasal rinse kit (which I haven't dared try yet! ) and he's got me on Hydrocodone :D :D and an antibiotic, but I'm going to stop taking that as it makes me feel hot, weak and dizzy. I'll have them call in another one on Monday.

We went to Walmart tonight and picked up an airfilter (which I think will help), and I was exhausted after walking around there for a while (we had to get distilled water for the nasal rinse too)

Thanks for the advice. The sleeping upright thing was the best. I'm going to try the bed tonight, but with a bunch of pillows.

Glad things worked out well. Wait until you get to blow the big honking mess of scab, blood and skin out of your nose! It'll feel like your brain is coming out and it will look like it too! It goes well with chips though! :D
