Qualifying & hot laps are behind . Anyone detect any smoke & mirrors in the 2 events ? Roush & company have a very dominating lineup BUT will Smoke pee on their parade ?
In '59 I watched Curtis Turner build the Charlotte MOtor Speedway & the last 50 feet or so were paved at gunpoint . Curtis ran out of money ? Was it a publicity stunt ? Few know the truth about it. The Charlotte paper probably knew.
Anyhow ,I watched the time trials [ FREE ] & Little Joe Weatherly get last years points winner prize . It was $ 2,000 & they rolled up a wheelbarrow behind him & out fell 2,000 silver silver dollars . What a laugh !
Almost every car there was sponsored by a car dealer, small business or paint & body shop. Believe me ,the help wasn't a fraction of todays megabucks .Only big sponsor I can remember was Keikafer [sp] Mercury ,the bigdaddy outboard motor folks. They sponsored 2 Dodges. Engines were not goverened by any rules. Bigger was better excepting handling had to be factored in ,particulary on this innovative high banked track. Later ,race/manufacturer shops emerged. Holman-Moody was Ford's child & proved it over a lot of years. Jasper engines, Truxmore [ Allison family ] ,Woods Brothers . The list is lengthy .
Admission was ten bucks but my daughter became ill & the doctor & pharmacy got my ticket money. I watched it on the radio.
Was pleased to see Kyle starting to improve track position over the last few months. Fine family but STP was their backbone for years . Sad .
Cooking chili for the family. Refuse to get in the town's cook-off because if you know you are great,no need to hurt anyone's feelings over just the best chili around .
Uncle [ dare to be great ! ] Alan
