Did you know;

Richard's dad,Lee Petty designed the hemispherical head ?

Richard would hold the record ,if there was one , of lapping the ENTIRE field ?

Richard ran airconditioning at times ? Superiority ? Yes !

I first heard "Iron head " applied to Walt Zawaski of Wilmington,N.C. in the '60's?

Walt had a Flathead Ford V-8 he ran at the early Daytona races ? His # B-19 was still winning modified races in Wilmington in the early '70's ?

If there was a ca$h protest lodged against Walt ,he would stop-watch a 30 minute cool down before unbolting ? Never lost a protest. I was selling performance products & gave an octane booster samples to some drivers & it did help a wee bit without re-jetting the carbs.

Walt's engine revved so highly that he [& others ] had to eliminate every other impeller vane on the twin water pumps to prevent coolant cavitation ?

Since I worked for Hurst ,I donated shift knobs too. The tee handle was too wide & banged the drivers right knee but the balls were extremely popular.

The gymnast did well, will he repeat ? Pretty boy has found a cure for snakebite but Junior hasn't . Talk about falling from grace ? Mark is very close but watch out for Smoke ! If his oddball diet don't do him in,he has a great chance tonight too.

Safe racing.

Uncle Alan ;)

uncleAlan,Knew Lee P. invented he Hemi,it was Richard in the Superbird but did he also drive the Dodge Daytona? Always cool to hear from you on this stuff. About tonight,.....well,I'll just be rootin' for JR!

Don't recall if Richard drove the Daytona but in '68 or '69 he went to Ford for 1 season in protest over some NASCAR snafu . There was something like a driver's strike/boycott going on . Years before Curtis Turner [he & Little Joe Weatherly were a TEAM ! ] resisted NASCARS objections to his wanting to start a driver's orginization . He was banned or self banned for a short time around the mid-'60's.

Surely there is a way to search old records BUT one of you young'uns'll have to do it. I lack the expertise 'cause I'm self tyaught & had a poor teacher.

Thanks.

Uncle Alan :D

Good race, except for JR blowing up,it seems they gave him a Sherman tank to drive instead of the Budmobile and the dang ol' diesel blew. End of the race was a shootout.Robbie Gordon got crashed with a couple laps left. Can anybody catch Kyle Busch, not this race.He wins,Biffle second, Brian Vickers third and Carl Edwards fourth.

Uncle Alan, I have heard that power steering on the stock cars is a new
invention, is that true? And did you ever go down to a dealership and get
a race car?

There was a time when "win on Sunday sell on Monday" actually happened.

And I hope that you are feeling fine.

Can we chip in and buy Kahne a pit crew?
Kid drove the wheels off that thing only to go back 5-8 places on each pit stop.
:grumpy:

Uncle, do you remember who built the 1/10th scale car and was winning races with it?
Late 70's early 80's. They only got busted when the back up got parked next to it. :D

Wasn't it Smoky Yunick that built a ('68?) Chevelle that was approx. 9/10s full size?? Didn't this car help bring on the use of templates?

Multiple response attempt.
Power steering is not new. Modifications needed because of the olh high rpm syndrome.

Believe Smokey might have done the trick car. He was an artful dodger. "Best damn garage in town " wasn't woofin' either.

Curtis Turner went to a small town race but his car didn't make it. He went to a car rental agency, got a new one, drove it to the track & borrowed a wide thrust tire & wheel.[ right front ] Cannot remember what else but surely he snubbed the springs with a chain or cable. He finished in the top five but the car had a few dings. Agency gave him a ration of shix & he probably bought the car. He was independently wealthy & raced for fun & the hell of it, Did a bit of boozing too. He was one of my favorites .

Uncle Alan :)

A rental car? :D :D

When racing gets in your blood you are hooked I guess.

I wonder how many wifes found out the car had been wrecked at the track?

Smokey, huh?
I do remember that that car brought out the first templates.

Pretty sneaky :D
Right up there with the regulation gas tank and the extra looooooooooooong gas line.

And the canvas bags of lead shot in the frame rails to make minimum weight...bags would rip and shot would fall out.

Good stuff ;)

...and putting pressure on the gas tank to blow out the dimples. Another bit of gas capacity.

and the trick flywheels that allowed instant acceleration. No large inertia load to overcome.

Those WERE the days !

Uncle Alan

Smokey's SCCA Trans Am Camaros...with air cans to help open the brakes to change pads in an instant..
fuel vents that acutually pressurized. In car oil filler =D

Forgot who did the Hemi small block chevy
