Bought myself a Benchmade Griptillian yesterday. Very nice knife and very sharp!
Well, I was showing it to a friend of mine, and when I put my hand out and asked for it back, he didnt see my hand and accidently sliced my thumb:( Blood sprayed out and got all over my white shirt, I ran into the bathroom and the blood just kept comming.. My friend went and got some peroxide, bandages, tape, and neosporin and we "fixed" up my thumb. About 6 hours later I went to change the bandages and as soon as I took them if stared bleeding like crazy again. I quickly bandaged it up and went to bed, the next morning (today) I took off the bandages and it looked like it pretty much stopped bleeding got an iodine pad and a large bandade and cleaned off the wound. Good as new!

by far the worst cut I ever got :(

take a hint from the bali folks(like I did from gollnick): buy Liquid Bandaid. medical grade superglue. As soon as you can get the wound pressed together and bleeding stopped(or at least slowed down on the really clean cuts), you use the applicator and put some along the cut. Seals up quickly, and the injury area is almost good to go.

or go the old fashioned, bandaid on 6 fingers, method. neosporin and a bandaid.

I've been known to take garlic in the bush, just for the clotting you get from the juices on a freshly sliced clove. And if I don't cut myself(or have another of my group need it) I have flavoring for supper.

Hey Guys...

Well one of the reasons I haven't been around for a bit is because I took a nasty cut as well to my right middle finger...

Went camping with my Scout troop. Got out of the car, cut three bags of ice with my brand new Cold Steel Pro Lite.. On the forth cut I swiped the knife across the bag of ice and felt the blade go through the knuckle and to the bone.

Another leader took me straight to the hospital.. No stitches or anything,, but I think they missed a cut tendon, because i can't bend the tip of my finger now...

I'm going to the surgeon tomorrow to find out what is going on...

It's been two weeks and it still hurts like a SOB....

We'll see what happens...

Hi..

In my case they looked at it and said that it wasn't needed..
The cut was certainly long and deep enough for stitches,, but in this case, the wound was clsed already and looking good,,so they didn't do anything other than Steri Strips....

I'm a little pissed that they didn't notice the tendon damage though...

I've had 3 injuries that would have been candidates for stitches...

worst one was a cut to my right index, thumb side... cutting trees, hit odd, blade slid down branch and into my finger... down to the bone, mid finger, 1.5"ish long. I have no temperature feeling, and little for pressure, just on that side.

Latest one was a stab to my left thigh(about 1.5" from the boys), put about 1/2" of tip into my leg. I bled for about an hour if you include the oozing as I was doing my shift at work. I figured that if I bled for more than an hour, I'd go in. I didn't have anything to wrap around it either. Nice redish purple scar now(from febuary), thats what I get for cutting 4wall tomato boxes against my leg.

only one I've gone in for, they just put steristrips on it to hold it. Cut my left thumb on an airvent when I was doing mainanence at BurgerKing. 12' ceiling, 6' ladder, so I was stretching up. only had 1 corner holding it in when I went to work on it, that last corner fell out as I was trying to get another one in, it fell. I pulled my hands back to protect my head, and it got my thumb. From the accident itself till I got into emerg was about an hour. I had it closed up and cleaned well enough before going in. The doc just opened the injury to look for any thing left inside, then closed it and put 3 strips on it, and gave me 2 weeks off work(no good gloves and I worked with chemicals all shift). have a 1/2" scar on my thumb pad now, nice curve on it. I can tell you the inside of your thumb looks like hamburger meat. The side of the index is just like a roast, with the grain going along the finger.

Blood sprayed out and got all over my white shirt

Ooouch! Keep an eye on that, sounds like you hit an artery and if you severed it the blood ain't going to be able to make it down the line...make sure everything stays nice and pink (if your a gringo), if any area gets white and or cold get it looked at stat. Also make sure you did not snip a tendon...they need to be repared within a couple of weeks or they will shorten.

The worse cut I ever got was with a piece of sheet metal. Slid a sheet up into the rafters, it slid down and I caught it to slide it back up. Looked down and noticed it was nicely embeded in the meat of my thumb. Strange that it was not bleeding, just a red line about 3 inches long, till I opened it up, then I could not stop it. 12 stiches, can still count them.

If it sprayed out per heart beat, I would've gone to the hospital while trying to slow/stop the bleeding. Those things are hard to close.
The little stab on my left index finger healed up nicely because the razor was sharp enough (sharpening and laspe of concentration and yikes), but that was because the blood oozed out instead of sprayed.
I'd get a doc to look at the wound.
Eric,
That sounds really nasty. Hope it's getting better.

It only sprayed out the second I was cut, then the blood was just gushing out... Seems to be getting better... friends tried to get me to go to the hospital but I told them to shut up :) I think I will be fine.

I've had stitches a couple of times to close up nasty cuts (usually sustained while whittling), and sliced off a fingertip once with an Xacto knife (occupational hazard when we used to paste up the newspaper). Got a nasty gash when we were sitting by the campfire and my wife tried to wave away a pesky bug, forgetting that she had a well honed Mora in her hand... nailed my hand good, she said accidentally. Words to live by... never PO a woman with a sharp blade.:D

Ouch. Brings back memories from about 3 weeks ago... I sliced the pad off my right thumb, one hand closing my SERE 2K. Wouldn't stop bleeding, as there was no skin to close up. Had to go to the hospital. Anyone ever heard of Surgicell?(sp). It's this pad that feels like fibreglass and it coagulates when it contacts blood. It seems as though you can feel the fibres hardening INSIDE the wound. When it finally hardens its like concrete though. I'd have to rank it as the most painful topical treatment money can buy, but it was the only thing to work.

AxeReaver, I hope everything's OK with the thumb (from one recently injured knut to another). Also, Eric, hope things aren't as serious as they sound. Good luck with the surgeon.

Regards,

Shaun.

Exactly....excuse me while I puke :barf: :barf: :barf: then pass out.

Good luck with all of your injuries, let's be careful out there!

worst cut i've had was while assembling a computer-a piece of the case (rf shield for 1/3 height bays) flew loose while prying it free, and what is my natural response? to stop the free-flying object. well, apparently, sheet metal at sufficient speeds has no competition with the flesh of a thumb. damned thing kept bleeding all over. went to the doc only after much prodding. the novacaine needle hurt a hell of a lot more than that cut did (could hardly feel it, really, though it seemed to like continuing to bleed), but after several stitches (maanged to cut a v in my thumb), all was closed. if it were in a less mobile area, the doc said he would have used superglue, which is what i would have used anyway if it were more controllable. i use regular old superglue regularly for various cuts/blisters/etc. good stuff, IF you can stop the bleeding completely. otherwise, it just bubbles up with blood and continues to leak.

The worst one I ever got was from my (first) Leek, index finger just slipped past the finger coil, when i was trying to get the hang of the thumb stud.

Most annoying was the other day, came home in a lousy mood, saw the postal service had returned some boxes to me (crushed - got me more cranky) opened them with my Boa to check nothing was damaged, and before i knew it blood was pumping out of front of the second smallest finger on my left hand.

The moral is never use a Kershaw in anger.

Ouch guys, I think I'm gonna puke. My worse was either the time a pencil was stabbed into my hand by my sister (so much being nice and offering her a sharp one) or the time I got cut open my a piece of Mylar.

Fun thread, not for the squeamish either! I've got a few 'interesting' scars as well, all part of the learning experience. I think one of the worst I got was from sharpening a sickle. I was using a sharpening rod and went a little too far, the edge sliced in right on the back of the second knuckle on my index finger.

Now I realize that I was lucky not to have cut the tendon, as it is "'Twas only a flesh wound". It really freaked out my mom though. The dumbest one I pulled was trying to snatch a balisong out of midair

. That was DUMB! I caught it all right, with the tip lodged in my palm. It healed quick though, but it sure did bleed! Nice to know I'm not alone though.

Hope your cut heals quickly, AxeReaver!

The worst cut I've ever gotten from a knife was from my SAK. After sharpening the blade, I started to wipe it down with my t-shirt. Well, I wasn't being careful enough and caught the edge with the pad of my left index finger. Funny thing is that I felt the blade just slice into the finger, but there was absolutely no pain at all. The feeling alone was enough to make me freak and drop my knife onto the table, but when I looked at my finger, it didn't bleed that much which was a good thing. The slight bleeding stopped fairly quickly and the cut healed up relatively quick as well. I guess that was one way of finding out whether my SAK's blade was sharp enough or not.:D

worst i've had with a knife was when i was rather eagerly sharpening some cheapo knife, and it cut about a 1.25inch slice into my left palm. it wouldn't stop bleeding, so i tried cauterizing it (with a lighter!) and it stopped. now it looks like my "lifeline" (palm reading term) is significantly longer.

i also fell down while holding a pair of scissors once-a decent-sized pair-and it went most of the way through the area between my right thumb and index finger. rather interesting having to push the bits of meat back into my hand. hardly a scar now, but it was messy. i don't seem to recall doing anything but cursing for awhile after that happened.

Gads, you self-help guys are made of sterner stuff than I. When the blood starts pumping I go to the emergency room. I hope your tetnus shots are up todate.

Best regards,

Argyll
