Nasty Weather Hikes !

Just thought I'd show a few pics from my hikes today and yesterday.

The pics didn't come out very well either day due to the crappy weather. I took my Knatchet today and started to make an Apache throwing star to test the Knatchet out. This is about the size of wood I had intended the Knatchet to chop as it is larger enough for most types of shelter and camp items.Needless to say the Knatchet went through like a hot knife through butter......

I started to notch it out but the rain was coming down heavier and heavier causing the wood to become slippy. Not wanting to slice my hand with the razor sharp edge I decided to abandon this today !

The dogs amused themselves while they waited for me.....

Just so Kev can't say this post is watered down I'm gonna add something that is the total opposite.......

Sphagnum moss can absorb 750 times it's own weight in water, it's natural acidity also makes it naturally anti-septic so is great as a dressing on any wounds etc !!!!

Snicker took this pic of Maisy and me....

Here are a few pics from our misty walk yesterday, our friends came along and bought Crazy Stewie the French Bulldog......

Re: Sphagnum Moss, a quote:

"The soft, absorbent qualities of sphagnum mosses made them ideal for use in personal hygiene and baby care. Virtually all First Peoples preferred sphagnum over other types of mosses for bedding, sanitary napkins, wound dressings and baby diapers. The northern groups, such as the Tahltan, especially used them. They had access to large muskeg areas where sphagnum is a dominant ground cover. Tahltan women, about to confined for childbearing, gathered and stored large quantities of sphagnum. They used it to carpet the lodge in which the baby was to be born, to wipe the newborn baby's skin and to line the bark cradle. Mothers used sphagnum mosses as diapers, placing a bunch between their babies' legs and holding it there with a soft strip of animal skin, such as a marmot's. This diaper would last for many hours. If necessary, it could be washed, dried, and reused. The Carrier and others used only the light-coloured sphagnums for diapers; they said that the red ones caused bad sores"

The previous quote came from Plant Technology of First Peoples in British Columbia, Nancy J. Turner, UBC Press, 1998, ISBN# 0-7748-0687-7, pages 58-59. I'm mentioning this, pitdog, because if you don't have this book, I think you'd want it. Highly recommended.

There is a small difference between the one linked and the one I have in that mine doesn't say "Including Neighbouring Groups in Washington, Alberta, and Alaska", but that could only be a bonus, or they just changed the title.

Great shots. As miserable as the rain and mist can be sometimes, it really brings a wonderful soft light to photos.

Good pics, pitdog, as usual. I always like your shots and, since I no longer have dogs, I always love the shots of Maisy and Snicker, too.

Keep 'em coming, please.

Oh, and Happy New Year to all!

I like doing the wet weather hikes......fun to be outside and fun to come back in afterwards :)

Looks like a good test for your wet weather gear as well. What rain gear and footwear were you sporting that day?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Doug

I love hiking in bad weather. It makes otherwise over-crowded trails look attractive once more, when I wouldn't go near them in nice weather because of all the people.

great pics Pit.. we love hiking in the rain around here... the woods smell so fresh..:)

cool info on that moss....that stuff can get really invasive. snatchet is growing on me more and more!

Jeez pit.
It's like that all the time in my neighborhood but not near as cold.
Today was 57 in the morning. BRRRRRRRRRRRR !
Misty mountain hopping. LOL
