Natchez/Laredo Carry?

Laredo strongside concealed in one of my Southern Comforts.

I'd swear I heard somewhere that Mr. Thompson regularly (EDC?) carries a Natchez or Laredo? Maybe he'll chime in to give you some idea's!

I've seen and met Mr Thompson at several parking lot sales. The one time that I saw him with a Laredo Bowie was at one of the Cold Steel Challenge events. He was wearing it tucked inside the waist cross draw, black leather sheath with peg!

I have a Natchez with a Southern Comfort sheath. Beautiful knife and sheath but I find it simply too much knife to carry. I'm 5'10" though so someone taller might be able to do it.

Now my Peace Keeper II is another story. I had some custom kydex made for it and it goes IWB. A VERY sweet carry due to the short handle.

Here's the Natchez in the Southern Comfort, with a Peace Keeper II (early Carbon V model) next to it. These are probably my all-time favourite CS knives and among my favourite fixed blades for sure.

If you are really keen, the Natchez CAN be carried IWB with a Southern Comfort and hidden with pretty good results. Yes, under this t-shirt and shorts is a 9 inch bowie! The SC sheath is undoubtedly the lowest profile sheath you will ever find for this knife. You will find it tricky when you start getting in and out of vehicles though. The Laredo might be easier, I dont know. Probably. Remember the Natchez is more than a 1/4 inch thick so weight is also a factor. Much as I luuuurve this knife, I feel the way they carried in the 1800s, ie open carry under the belt/sash, is the way to go. Also they rode horseback, not in cars with bucket seats!

Of course, the smaller knife is much more comfortable and can be worn all day, sitting, standing - whatever.

Buffalohump, Thanks for sharing your pics. I am curious about the Southern Comfort sheath. Is the part with the peg adjustable? From the photos it appears as though it is a sepearate piece that can be slid up or down the sheath and then held in place with a single screw.

I'm almost sure the sheath you saw LCT wearing with the Laredo was really a black Southern Comfort from me ... Concealex, not leather. He has been using my sheaths for his personal knives for well over 15 years. If you check the proof DVDs before this latest batch, you will see him wearing one in many of the scenes, as well as on the "Never Unarmed" DVDs.

The year was 2010. It is the only Cold Steel Challenge that I have attended. I remember it vividly for several reasons, the record breaking heat, Robert Vaughn was given a Chevy Camaro for his years of dedication and Lynn Thompson was awarded a "Master at Arms" title/degree by a host of martial artists.

There were pictures of the event in Cold Steel's photo gallery but for some reason are no longer available.

I had been considering entering the event and wanted to see what it was like in person. The Knife Fighting 40+ category was made up almost entirely of Cold Steel employees. Troy Miller won and Ron Baliki took second that day.

Mike, It may very well have been one of your sheaths. At the time, 2010, I was unaware of you and your products and am more concerned with my ability to recall events clearly than anything else. The weather was extremely hot and I remember thinking how uncomfortable that "leather sheath" must have been as it was tucked inside the waist with the peg riding along the belt.

Oddly enough I was also thinking about the legality of his method of carry. In California a fixed blade knife must be worn suspended form the waist in plain view and not concealed in any way. Even a shirt or jacket partially covering the handle of a fixed blade knife is enough to get you arrested. I could only imagine the response from police with a knife shoved into one's waist with only the handle protruding!

It is for these reasons that I think what I saw that day back in September of 2010 was black leather with a brass peg. Hopefully the link to the photo gallery will be reopened and I will know for certain.

Agree that the Natchez is a little big for carrying IWB, sitting or getting in and out of vehicles, but the Laredo works very well. Quick presentation from concealment is not a problem either, where the Natchez would take more effort. Natchez is best carried behind the belt (or IWB) cross draw IMHO. If worn strong side, I think it is better set up for a "cavalry draw" (palm out), because less shoulder articulation is needed in the draw stroke.

Nope it is fixed in place. That sleeve is what keeps the peg (frog) secure in place. Its a beautiful sheath to be sure, very low profile and minimalist. I have another Sastre sheath and its the same. Very precise fitting. No excess material. Kydex has a distinct advantage over leather in this type of carry because its thinner and lighter (so it doesnt add too much bulk and weight) and isn't affected by sweat.

No I was referring to the Natchez, which is what I was 'wearing' in that pic. Not sure of the actual blade length, it could be a bit more than 9 inches. Probably - its a beast! :D

You also mentioned a 9 inch bowie in the last photo. It wouldn't happen to be a Cold Steel Marauder would it?
