And who was guilty back then? The machetes or the murderers? I think it was the latter.
They abused a useful tool to make their bad intentions become reality, like other criminals abuse hammers, kitchen knives, cars, axes or wooden sticks to kill people. Don´t blame it on the tool, blame it on the person who did it.

Sorry, all I see is a liberal so called newspaper making fun of you and me, not funny at all.

You're right. But you can learn from it as well. In the UK, this parodied view of gun owners (freaks, nuts, etc) is the accepted wisdom. I see plenty of preaching to the converted on these forums and elsewhere but no matter how logical the arguments are, this is how you guys (us guys) are percieved by 'neutral' people.

For you to successfully protect your rights, by swinging the 'neutrals' you have to understand that this is how you are seen. It doesn't matter how much logic, or statistics you throw in their faces, if they don't like you they won't agree. Look at Charlton Heston, a man who has gone from noble, heroic figure to object of derision and hate in the media, because of his integrity and dedication to his beliefs and core values.

*Snicker* The funniest thing about The Onion is when people take it seriously.

That was pretty damn funny :D .

Now, can anyone identify what is attached to the clip in the machete buyers pocket in that pic.

With all due respect (and I do respect A.G. a great deal), I think it is healthy to know when to laugh at oneself.

I never thought of The Onion as a newspaper, or liberal; sometimes sick or twisted, but always funny!

They seem to poke fun at everything and everybody, especially those topics that are looked at so seriously in our culture. I tend to get defensive easily sometimes myself, so I enjoy their perhaps offbeat humor as a wakeup call to not take life so seriusly all the time.
Just my opinion,
Take care,
Brome

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it as liberal, and besides, among relatively right-wing communities the term "liberal" has lost most of its liberalist or libertarian connotations.

What I do see though is an attempt to shake things up, to wake people from their complacency, through the the most subtle means of all, humour. Most everyone will laugh at how ridiculous the article is, and that will leave some pro-gun-control people to ponder the validity of their own stance towards gun control. Satire is definitely a good thing, keeps people thinking about their political environment. And we all know that more thinking is good.

You are right, it's a satire, not to be taken seriously. Read some of the other articles.
