Most of us have had the opportunity to look at the sites within this forum to check out our states laws concerning the legal blade lengths that affect our day-to-day lives.

Has anyone gone farther than that statistically(?); compared trends and comparisons? Areas of the nation where sizes are similar, disimilar - disparities? West Coast versus East Coast? Midwest?

What is the national average when looking at all states? Is there an average out there? How about the Knife Manufacturers? What have your marketers found out?

It seems to me, from what I have read - lightly, that 3.5 inches is the most common folding blade length acceptable. If this is true, why don't we see more knives with this blade length?

Am I off? - - ok, I am off (in several ways I suppose:D )

Now I know that state laws differ from local jurisdictions (counties and cities), so for now, lets stay with state level, ok?

How about it - those in-the-know??

Final queston - what state are you from and what size blade do you carry daily that you know is legal in your local area?

Good question. I know that the state laws here prohibit carrying any knives with a blade 5.5 inches or longer, including folders. I might do some digging on this myself.

California state law puts no limit on the length of a folding knife. :D

I often carry my AFCK or Large Sebenza. I occasionally carry my CUDA Maxx. I'm hoping to pick up one of those 7" CUDA Maxxs sometime! hehe

Thanks Black Mariah (wind?)!
Doesn't anyone else travel these days? I am really surprised at the lack of information provided in response to my question; i thought this would provide a lot of info for those who are going on vacation in different states, or travel on business.

Tell you what - I am really interested so if you folks just tell me what your states, or local laws are, I will work up some stats when we get enough responses to work with.....

For you business owners - this should be a simple effort.

Massachusetts-----------No blade length restriction statewide. After 9-11 City of Boston has a 2 1/2" blade length restriction that isn't enforced but still on the books.

I think the cap in illinois is 4"inches but i'm sure...and It might be different in chicago. Truthfully I'm really sure what the laws are I guess it's never been an issue.... the only time I encountered someon checking for knives was pre 9/11 at O'hare One time I just casually put the knife and my keys in the bowl walked through and snached them out before i was noticed and the onther time the gard was a women and refused to put it up to her had to see if it was the legal size so she just gave it back to me... It was a fully serrated Endura back then! Go figure

Idaho has no length restriction or any other restrictions, except that the knife (or any other weapon) can't be carried "concealed" without a permit. Can legally carry fixed blades, folders, or handguns openly without a permit, although it might get the attention of the public and they might be concerned and call the police on you anyway...
