This past Saturday was National Trails Day. The Friends of the Cedar River Watershed and King County Parks hosted a group of trail work volunteers at Taylor Mtn. Forest.

The day's tasks included clearing and extending some drainage ditches, removing invasive English holly, completing a ford at a small stream and building a bench for a viewpoint.

Here are some volunteers putting the finishing touches on the ford.

To build the bench we needed to cut an 8 foot long section of a log that dropped on the trail in last winters storm. When the chainsaw went wonky the volunteers decided to get medieval and do the work with hand tools.

They took turns with the Pulaski and cut through a 14" alder.

Then they split it lengthwise with a sledge hammer and wedges.

Once split they picked it up with a pair of 'sweet hooks' - log carriers.

They lined it up.......

.... and hauled it up the trail to the viewpoint.

Assembly of the bench will be finished during the next volunteer event.

Nice work. We had about 11 volunteers working in the Evans Notch area of the NH/ME White Mountain National Forest. Clearing blowdowns, drainages, and brush.

Square - well done indeed. Please let me know in advance for next year, I would love to come and help out. Get some axe use, knowledge, time in for everyone involved. Looks like a good time, and for a good cause. Congrats!

Thanks, Op. I can't tell you how much fun it is to really go out and do something productive with an axe. Trail work is rewarding.
