Hello. For those who own or who've handled both, could someone please compare and contrast the Native 3D (Zytel) and the Lil'Temp, in terms of their usefulness as self-defense blades. I believe the blade lengths are similar, althought the Lil'Temp offers two different styles. Do these models offer much over the Delica, which also is about the same length? I am particularly interested in comparing the blade lock-up, belt-clip carry options, grip/handle strength, etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Native 3D

1. general purpose knife 3" blade
2. all purpose handle shape accomodates many grips, and is symmetrical for ambidexterity
3. guardless, choil is advantageous for control
4. injection molded 3-D FRN handle (one piece)
5. lockback rated as heavy duty (300# total minimum, actually averaging over 500#)
6. Light and easy to carry, relatively slender.
7. Tip up, left or right handed.

Lil Temp

1. dedicated MBC design 3" blade
2. specialized assymetrical handle locks right hand in postion (also works in reverse grip)
3. double-guard for ultimate safety on thrusts
4. 3-D machined G10 scales backed with nested dual steel liners.
5. MBC rated compression lock (600# total minimum, don't know actual average)
6. Bulky and heavy (nearly 5oz) for only 3" of blade.
7. Tip up or down, right handed only.

Carlos listed the attributes pretty well there. Other than weight and ambidexterity, the Lil' Temp takes the prize. For real MBC or just real hard use, I'd take the Lil' Temp everyday. Generally, I do take it with me everyday.

The Native III is a great knife, but mine is still sitting in the box due to the Lil' Temp and a pair of Calypso Jr.'s. If I want heavy duty, it's the Lil' Temp. For something a bit lighter, it's a Calypso Jr. The Native III would be somewhere in between the two, but I could live without mine.

As far as comparing to the Delica, either one offers much better grip security IMO. The Delica is more of a light use model than either of the other two.

The Lil'T is a dedicated MBC knife, while the Native isn't. I guess this answers your question.

If I were going to choose based only on MBC it would be the Lil' Temp. It was designed with MBC in mind. That being said, the Native III is a great knife for the $$$ and I'm sure it would do the job in a defense situation.

IMO the MBC attributes of a folder is mostly found in the grip. Lock-up and strength is important, as well as the blade, but for me it all is secondary to a good and solid grip. For me the Li´l Temp has been an EDC for over a year, my current office surrounding is forcing me to look into something even smaller, which in my case became the Dodo. It shares some great features with the Temp.

anyway, both the Native and the L´l Temp have that mega grip Fred Perrin mentioned in his review of the original Native. Both knives lock into you hand, which is important to me for MBC folders. The Temp is better, since it fills my hand better, but moreso because the ergonomics complement the draw. Honestly, for me, the Li´l Temp just pops into my hand in the open position in a high speed simulated stress draw. The Native is not that good. I feel both are above average MBC folders. The Native is more basic, while the Temp fills virtually every finesse you would want in an MBC folder. If there is a more than average chance of losing my Temp, I carry a Native...or two.

Now the Dodo differs from the Li´l Temp in many ways, but you can still find the same basic ergonomics that not only help you keeping a good grip, but they also aid in the draw.
