So I have the native 5 and I'm thinking about modifying it. It being a sprint run, would any changes to it hurt its value? I would like to polish (especially the spacer from the inside) and anodize the hardware. Am I crazy to even do such a thing to a knife that's somewhat hard to come by? Any suggestions about how to get this done or even any other modifications that can be done to it.

I carry a Native Forum run and don't worry about it all. If you're thinking that saving the knife in the event that down the road it'll be worth a lot, it'd likely be many years for the knife to double in money, if ever. Plus allow for inflation. So you aren't going to make a huge killing. At your estate sale the kids might make a little.

I think only the guys that lay out serious cash for collector grade knives look to make any money years from now. If they are even still legal. ;)

Couple options. If you decide to make it a safe queen, pack it away and buy another like it to use. Or what I would do, is use it in the here and now and enjoy your knife. :)

You can go into the other sub forums that deal with makers and pimping, or ask in the Spydie forum, to find someone to work on it. And I'm sure the other guys here would be able to make good recommendations.

Great knife BTW. Mine is the G10 forum knife and I've been wanting to try a carbon version, but as you say, little hard to find. It'd be a user though. I think the Native 5 is one of Spydercos best. F & F is perfect.

Go forth and use it! :) :)

I look at it like this, knives are drugs to us. Everyone knows you shouldn't get high on your own supply. If you are selling then don't mod ur knives. If your an addict then you can't stop yourself, so selling knives may not be for you if you can't differentiate between knives that are yours and knives you'd like to sell. I say ALWAYS mod your shit and keep it forever if your in the production class.

I'd say that in general, any mods or personalization will hurt the resale value. It just reduces the pool of potential buyers.

I don't tend to sell my knives, but if I'm looking for something that's no longer available from dealers, I typically want it to be as close to bnib as possible, even if it will be a user.

I've thinned the blade on mine, slowly, with diamond blocks. Most of the spyder logo is gone and it does seem to slice better.

Didn't they make a large number of those? 1500 or so? Seems they made enough that getting another one would be easy.

Anodizing the hardware might be a problem, as it is all pretty much hardened steel. The back lock might look strange if you take a torch to it, there is a potential to ruin something. Since the liners are not titanium, again the "anodization" might not work as you think it would. In many cases when you modify a knife, it impacts the value in a negative way. Someone looking to buy that specific item you have will pay more for it if it is untouched. What you think is a cool modification, might turn someone else's stomach.
