Native 5 disassembly question

I have some Cuscadi scales on order for my Native 5, so in preparation I thought I would break it down, clean it and polish the components. However, I am not clear how I completely break it down, so I thought I would see if someone has done this.

The issue I am having is with the second screw which attaches to the pivot pin (or whatever the proper term is). The first screw came out just fine, but the second screw does not budge. I can try putting more pressure on the screw, but it seems like I am already getting close to too much pressure. On a related note, does anyone know if the pivot pin is notched to prevent it from rotating? If not, will I need a tool to keep it from just spinning once I get the screw loosened just a bit?

Thanks!

I've seen photos that appear to indicate that the hole for the pivot in at least one of the liners, if not both, is D shaped. That, in turn, would mean that at least one "outer step" of the pivot is also D shaped and would prevent the pivot from rotating when assembling/disassembling the knife. As for the reluctant screw, could just be thread locker. Have you tried heating it? If not, dip it in boiling water for a minute or so and try again.

Thanks for the input. I put a bit more pressure on the screw and it did come out without issue. It appears that there was a tiny bit of red loctite used, which would explain why that side was harder to break loose. The pivot is in fact D shaped on the second side, preventing it from just spinning with the screw (thanks Spyderco!).

The Native is back together and now I can continue to anxiously wait for the new scales.

Ive tried to take that same screw out on 2 of my native 5s and stripped both of them

sorry to hijack but I've been wondering if you have tips on fixing Native 5 blade centering. Which parts affect centering the most?

That sucks that you had problems removing yours, Kyle. I can definitely see how it happens, as that sucker is hard to break loose. I figured it had to come out one way or another since I have scales on the way, but I am glad it worked out ok.

As far as blade centering, I would try loosening all the screws and try pushing the liners in opposite directions (tip to heel), then tightening them back down. There should be some threads here on correcting blade centering if that does not make sense.

I also ran into the red loctite on that screw. The best way to deal with it is with heat. On mine, I touched a soldering iron briefly to the screw. You don't want to get it so hot it melts the G-10, but hot enough to soften the loctite. That makes it much easier...

pushing the liners doesn't work as well on a back lock knife, especially one with a solid steel backspacer. =)

i played with the pivot screws a bit. one side was way tighter than the other. Centering improved but still not perfect.

Hi guys, just wondering what size torx bits are needed to disassemble the Native5. Thanks!

T-6 for the clip screws, T-10 for the blade pivot, and T-9 for everything else.

I felt silly asking since I've disassembled Native5s before but unfortunately I don't have all my tools where I'm currently stationed.

Thank you!
