My 2 week old native 5 salt is defective and must be sent back for a replacement. I was about to start carrying her today but last night I noticed a little play where the two sides of the frn meet together. No biggie, I'll just tighten the screws.....nope...they are completely stripped. Both black screws that sandwich the frn together are free turning and I am able to actually pull handles apart from each other. Yikes!! I even noticed that there seems to be no metal threads for the screws to tighten into. Is spyderco cutting cost/corners and cheaply making their knives? The screws in question look like they are just imbedded in the plastic frn.....chime in anyone with insight please.

I will give mine a look when I get home. Just bought it off the exchange recently, but haven't had a chance to put it to use yet. Did you already contact Spyderco for the warranty work?

Looks like he sent it back for replacement.

Mine is good that I received from the exchange. It's a bit stiff in the backlock spring, causing the action to feel back (high pressure on tang) but the pivot itself is good.

Do you have pictures?

Sorry no pics...it's on its way back to DLT for replacement. Great customer service. Hope the replacement is in good working order. I am still troubled by the lack of a steel female thread housing in the plastic. If that's the way the salts are designed then what's stopping this from happening again?.....just sayin....

I assume the Native 5 LW and the Salt version are built the same way. I don't have the same problems as you, although I really haven't checked the scale screw situation you mention. I do know that there are no pivot washers, let alone bearings of any sort, on the knife. The blade just pivots directly against the FRN handles, which to me would indicate a very minimalist construction which may carry over to the handles screws as well.

As I mentioned elsewhere I really can't say I'm a fan of the Native 5

Checked mine, all the screws have female metal threads.

Your knife must have been a really bad lemon..
