Native II...anyone had a similar...?

I have a Native II and having hard time fast openning the blade with one hand.

The openning move was sometimes fairly smooth although it wasn't close to the smoothness of my Calypso Jr. Ltwt., to rough abrasive feel of the grinding of the blade tang against the lock. It has been that way since I bought it from a internet knife store about 2 months ago and I thought that tuff-glide or oil will fix the problem.

Suspecting dirt or oil buildup I immersed/cleaned the knife to liquid dish washing soap openning and closing the blade and rinsed with hot water hoping it will fix the problem. Nothing changed.

This is my first Spyderco knife and as much as possible I do not want to part with it, if anyone had a similar situation how was it fixed?

Happy ID4 everyone!

I suspect it wouldn´t help you any further as you´ve already used different cleaning approaches, but the ultrasonic submersion cleaners used by jewellers and opticians work quite well in cleaning folding knives.

Thanks for the advice judge. Sent an email this morning to Spyderco customer service and waiting for response if I'll send the knife to them.

I hope it wouldn't be anything serious they'll recommend to retire the knife.

I think the store I got the knife from sold me a used knife because of small dents to the clip screw which I just noticed lately. I'll just buy a new one from another dealer and place that internet knife store in my little blacklist.

Sal may not like this... I found my nativeII very hard to open despite TuffGlide. SO.. I opened it, and {bent) the knife just a little bit. It is now possible to open it with weak hand trigger finger ans wrist flick. (Mine is set up as a left pocket knife for a right handed police).

MarkCid84..... in the closed position do you have side to side blade play, hear the knocking sound of the blade hitting the inside of the handle, and when openning hear the sound of the blade scratching the inside of the handle?

I think my Native II is in deep trouble, but I'm still hoping Spyderco might be able to save my first Spyderco knife.

Mine is still tight, no rattle when closed or grinding when opening, Just easier to open. It sounds like you might have a defective one, But I would be willing to bet that Spyderco will stand behind it and fix it for you.

I just got a NIB plain edge Native II stainless.

It is much harder to open one handed than my black or blue Native.

I must say I am a little disappointed.

Stupid question.

Did you try to clean the "hinge" with a little WD-40???

Folks.... I think I was able to fix my Native II. Placed the knife on top of TV Guide which serves as the anvil, and light taps with a small hammer on the area around the pivot pin with a piece of small cardboard on top for protection against scratches (cut from USPS Priority Mail box).

Side to side blade play when closed was almost gone, hardly felt, the grinding sound was gone, the feel of blade scratching gone, and easier to open than before.

Please don't ask me what happened inside the knife and why because I do not understand, and don't know how the mechanism of this knife works. I just thought that I'll have to slightly tighten the area around the pivot pin to reduce blade play and the other problems were gone too.

My first Spyderco knife stays with me and I don't have to send it in, or maybe just for tune-up.

My only wish now for my Native II is to have a modified handle finger groove because 1/3 of finger hole buried inside the handle makes it difficult to position my thumb for a good blade openning push.

Big-Target.... I did try the WD-40 before, didn't work.

MarkCid84 - My Native II is doing great, a few drops of oil and its working better than after I unknowingly fixed it.

Thanks much to fellow forumites (judge, MarkCid84, Big-Target) for your suggestions and advice.

Let me see.... I have a Native II, Wegner Jr., Dragonfly ltwt, Calypso Jr. VG-10 ltwt, and Delica ltwt. The Pro-Grip is already on order and awaiting delivery. All of them are in plain edge except for the Native II.

I think my next Spyderco is gonna be a Calypso Jr. stainless handle or Delica II, and of course in plain edge.

RGRAY.. I wish I could recommend to you what I did to my knife but I won't because I cannot explain what happened when I tap it with a hammer.
