Well, if I were going to do this (and I just may try it sometime, using Piter's idea to obtain a lower ride at the same time too) my solution would involve silver soldering a piece of metal, drilled to fit the hollow screw, to the "top" side of the wire, and cutting a pair of grooves in the clip recess of handle for them. Might be able to get away with just the grooves and using the piece of metal on top like a washer, but I tend to do things the hard way.
Regarding handle thickness. Not counting clips, the Native is about 3/8" thick, and the Native III is about 5/8" at its thickest point. Bear in mind however, that the Native III handle is not a constant thickness. Think of the shape of a bowling pin. The pivot pin of the handle is the bottom of the pin, fairly thick, maybe a half inch. It then grows thicker, with max thickness occurring at about the location of the Spyderco emblem on the finger pad. Then it thins slowly, with minimum thickness, about the same 3/8 as the regular Native, at the clip screw. Finally it flares again to nearly half an inch at the very end. All of this is 3 dimensional to some extent also, so the edges of the handle are not as thick as the centerline. When coupled with the already excellent shape of the Native handle, this additional shaping makes for a knife that it very comfortable in the hand for prolonged use. The trade off is that it's a bit thicker than some folks prefer in the pocket.
