Native III wire clip on a std Native?

i've been reading around the forum and doing searchs on the Native as i plan to purchase one. i'm leaning towards the std model native as a thinner handle appeals to me (i do like the blade design on the III better but thats another issue that i've seen debated here already).

my question is if a III wire clip will be adaptable to a std Native.

any help appriciated!

Welcome to the forums Paul. It's not a simple case of replacing one with the other, that's for sure. The mounting, while similar, is quite different. The attached picture may give you a better idea of how the two look and why they are not directly interchageable.

deacon,
thanks for the pic!

it looks like the wire clip "could" be adapted to work on the std Native as the cuts on the III look to be spaced the same as the recessed area on the Std. but i would guess it wouldn't be nearly as stable.

reading through searches i've done, it sounds as if the handle on the III is a bit thicker/more bulky... does anyone know the measurable difference between the two?

Well, if I were going to do this (and I just may try it sometime, using Piter's idea to obtain a lower ride at the same time too) my solution would involve silver soldering a piece of metal, drilled to fit the hollow screw, to the "top" side of the wire, and cutting a pair of grooves in the clip recess of handle for them. Might be able to get away with just the grooves and using the piece of metal on top like a washer, but I tend to do things the hard way.

Regarding handle thickness. Not counting clips, the Native is about 3/8" thick, and the Native III is about 5/8" at its thickest point. Bear in mind however, that the Native III handle is not a constant thickness. Think of the shape of a bowling pin. The pivot pin of the handle is the bottom of the pin, fairly thick, maybe a half inch. It then grows thicker, with max thickness occurring at about the location of the Spyderco emblem on the finger pad. Then it thins slowly, with minimum thickness, about the same 3/8 as the regular Native, at the clip screw. Finally it flares again to nearly half an inch at the very end. All of this is 3 dimensional to some extent also, so the edges of the handle are not as thick as the centerline. When coupled with the already excellent shape of the Native handle, this additional shaping makes for a knife that it very comfortable in the hand for prolonged use. The trade off is that it's a bit thicker than some folks prefer in the pocket.

Pro Carry Paul,
I did change the native III's clip and put in on my S30V native FRN. Without any mods it fit under the barrel bolt flange. What was not quite right is the wire wasn't flush to the scale on both sides. probably due to the 3D shape of the III. I'd say with some bending (these wires are pretty stong) it could probably be made flush. I do enjoy the wire clips. I've been looking to see if one would fit my Lil' Temp :)
