Hi all,

I just recently found an FRN Native in VG-10 with wire pocket clip for $39 all in.

Would you get it or save up for the S30V version?

They're two somewhat different knives. Kind of like the difference between a pistol with standard and target grips. The VG-10 C78 Natiive III has a thicker handle with a palm swell and a heel shelf. The S30V C41 Native has a thnner, flat handle.

I have several knives in VG-10 as well as knives in SV30. VG-10 is good steel and I have never had any problems or complaints. However, I do like SV30 a little better and of the two Native models I prefer the SV30 model for ergonomics, looks, and blade steel.

S30V is probably my favorite steel ever so if they make a model of a knife and there is one vg-10 and one s30v im getting the s30v...its a harder blade to sharpen but stays alot sharper for longer. Just my opinion though. have a good one.

The C78 (VG-10) version is going to be discontinued in 2010 if this helps in your decision.

At that price you are getting a steal. Not my favorite Spydie but I'd pick it up for that price. These were notorious for having stiff opening action in the early ones. The problem was "fixed" in the more recent pieces but I've still never handled one that opened as easily as it's American-made counterpart. I didn't know it was slated to be disco'd. When did that information come out?

I'm comparing among 3 different models, the D4 VG-10, E4 ZDP, and Native S30V, and I have to say that the S30V Native is my favorite to work with. I don't like the knife better, but I do like the steel much better. It stays sharp really long and cuts very well. I did mention that I'm comparing 3 models because the difference could be due to the grinds; the D4 and E4 are flat-saber ground while the Native is hollow-saber ground. Either way, I like the Native's performance better.

S30V is super easy to get sharp in my experience. Whenever I cut with my Native, I spend about 10-15 minutes on the DMT EF stone, and it's back to razor-sharp. That's about the same as my ZDP Endura and a little longer than my VG-10 knives.
