I was looking at my native and realized that the thumb grooves on the spine are spaced just right and have a sharp enough edge to be used on a sparking rod (like the BSA hotspark that I have on my keychain). I just tried it out, and lit some laundry lint on the second spark. It really throws the sparks! That puts the native firmly in the must-have category for a survival kit.

You know that is something I have never thought of before. I can see how you would get that type of leverage with the native. I'll bet the Spyderco knives with that "Cobra Hood" feature would also give way to making good sparks as well. I have a fixed blade Cold Steel hunting knife with a "bone breaker" feature ground into the spine of the blade. I wish that Spyderco would consider something like that on one or more of their fixed blade models.
We never think about those kinds of things until we actually use the knives in a bind to test them to all of their limits. Good point, good observation :)
