I have two natives that are simular but different. WHY?:(

1. Has the spider on the blade,a thumb print on the scales over the blade swivel pin and a 1 1/2 inch depression in the scales with the logo in it, wire belt clip, the blade is marked Seki city Japan and Y8-10 spyderco

2. No spyder on the blade, no thumb print or depression in the scales. Blade is marked Golden Colorado USA Earth and Spyderco cmps30V, the belt clip is the standard solid spring type clip.

I am not a collector, but a user and just wondering why the difference?

You have two different Native models, one is a Native C41 and the other is a Native 3 C78, the Native 3 uses the VG-10 steel and is made in Japan. They are both excellent quality blades.

Yeah, there are several different Natives. I've had both, and I have a slight preference for the S30V one, mostly in looks and it's a little thinner. Conversely, I prefer the wire clip and grippy texture of the VG10 model. For our purposes, they're effectively the same knife. Comes down to preference.

Why are they different. The first one is made to be slightly more ergonomic, at the price of being somewhat more bulky in the pocket. It has a blade made out of a premium Japanese steel which is softer than s30v but still does not delve very easily. And take the very fine edge. The exact reason for the creation the wire clip I do not know, however I find it to be just as secure and much less likely to scratch paint and furniture, as well as being lower profile.

The second is much more the traditional native, it is obviously thinner, so less able to fill the hand. But still comfortable. It is made out of a harder steel that is manufactured in United States.s30v is made through a special process in which a powder made up of the blade steals constituent elements, is melted under precise conditions, to achieve a higher carbon content, thus greater wear resistance than normal steals. Until recently was a top gun among steals.

You S-30V Native is the traitional model. The fact that it is made in the States and has the S-30V steel does add a touch of class. I like the thinner profile.

There is nothing wrong with the Native 3. The VG-10 steel is really good, and a lot of people are really happy with the thicker handle and wire clip. The friction grooves at the base of the blade above the hole are also less abrasive.

I guess in the end it comes down to what you prefer in a knife. There are a lot of supporters for both schools of thought.
