I just picked up a Native 5 lightweight with a CPM S35VN blade. It looks like it will a winner, but I see the Boye Detent is gone. When did this happen and why?

Interesting.....shows no Boye Detent on the Spyderco website.

Wonder if the licensing expired.....

This is actually not an issue with licensing at all; from what I've read, the Boye Dent is not on this knife as an intentional design. There are a few posts here by Mr. Glesser about the fact that they did some redesigning of the lockback system so that this model would be safe without the dent, making minor adjustments and many test models until they were confident in it. I myself just received a Native 5 CF/S110V and feel no need for the dent, as it is rock solid and very unlikely to be unlocked in any grip. I'm sure the true experts will be around to further clarify.

Some respected members have been vocal about preferring non boye detent over the years. I think that weighs into it. Im completely fine either way. I suppose it does look better without one though.

The aesthetic is really nice on it. Having the extra bit on which to push gives it a really nice snap to unlocking, too.

On this design and the Chaparral I like the lack of dent. On the FRN versions, I think it works. Overall, it's a minor consideration in my opinion, and I probably wouldn't care much either way. I do think the aesthetics are a little better with no dent.
