Native vs. Native II Question

I'm very interested in getting the Native II w/stainless handles (and a non-serrated blade). However, I've read so many posts where people talk about how wonderful the CPM 440V blade is (which is only available in the lightweight handle).

I definitely prefer the stainless handles, and, while both are a bargin, I can't afford to buy both. So, what I'm wondering is, what am I giving up by going with the AUS-10 blade versus the so-highly-praised CPM 440V blade? Is edge retention better w/the CPM blade? Is it stronger?

Does anyone know why the stainess version doesn't come with the CPM blade?

Either way, the Native is a wonderful knife; I just want to pick the one that works the best for me.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Perhaps the knives made in Seki City come with premium Japanese steel, and the US-made knives sometimes come in ATS-34 and sometimes come in premium US steel like CPM440V.

AUS-10 is an excellent steel. I would think the average user would never know the difference. Also the Native II is more comfortable, to me, than the Native. The handle is thinner and just feels better. I would go with the Native II if I were you.

Is this some kind of tease? I just went to your web site and it doesn't mention a plain version. Are you actually receiving them now? Sal said "before Christmas" which could be now or could be five months from now. Since I'm planning on buying one of these for my sister from Christmas I want to know when they are actually "in the pipeline." Or actually I guess I want to know when they are falling out of this end of the pipeline!

Native II is available in plain Edge! Got mine about 2 months ago, waited for 3-4 months to get it... Great knife! The only thing that I don't like 'bout it, it does not have the detailed point of origin, "Golden Colorado, USA, Earth" that the plastic handle version has engraved on the blade. Still a great knife.

To all,

Thanks for the info. I'm still leaning towards the Native II, plain edge, which is what I wanted in the first place. However, after having seen so many people sing the praises of CPM 440V (including Sal), I wanted to find out what I'd be missing out on by going with the AUS-10 blade.

Where can one get the plain edge version?
