Is the Native now being made or offered in anything other than 440V blade steel? The dealers I've seen are unclear on current websites. If so, what's the price differential between 440V & Gin-1 or any other bladesteel currently offered? Does Spyderco have plans to offer G-10 scales on a regular production model Native?

Thanks--Will

Will,

I can't answer all your questions but will give a few of them a try.

Spyderco makes two models of the Native, the Lightweight has the 440V blade. The other is Stainless Steel handle and the blade is not 440V. (I just took a quick look around for a Spyderco catalog but no luck finding one.) I think the steel handled version is GIN-1, but I'm not sure, I do know it is not CPM 440 V.

Spyderco changed to 440 V in the lightweight somewhere around a year and a half ago. If the knife has the round notch removed from the backlock (ala 2001) it is 440 V. Otherwise I guess you have to open the blade and look at the markings

The old GIN-1 Lightweight Native is recent enough that it may still be around on some dealer's shelves.

I don't know what the difference in retail price between the two is, but I did recently buy a 440 V Native from a shop here in town for just under $50.00 (plus tax). I would assume that an older GIN-1 LW would be cheaper, either because the dealer bought out existing stock, or because he had a few on hand when the new 440 V Native came out, and hasn't been able to sell the old ones.

The only G-10 Natives I know of are the old blue BF Natives, and the recent black model with the inlay. Both of these have 440V blades.

I have got to tell you that the new Native has to be the deal of the year. Where else can you get a knife with 440 V blade for under $50.00! This is completely aside from the fact that the Native design is about perfect for a medium size folder.

I think the stainless steel Natives are AUS 10. A year or so ago, before the 440V Natives were out I think you could find a Gin-1 Native for around $35 at a few internet dealers'.

Hey, might as well piggy back a question on the status of the almite native. Hope that's still in the works.

G10 Native with 440V... Lots of potential for an excellent medium sized stout blade. Especially with dual steel liners! Whew!

Nakano

Hi Sing. Long time no see.

Mike, Mayor, Sing & Nakano--

Thanks for the informative remarks. Guess there's still some question from dealer to dealer on what steel one might get when ordering a light-weight. Maybe the vagueness is purposeful, until they get rid of the Gin-1 stuff. Anyway, thanks for the updates and thoughts.

I was hoping maybe Sal could shed more light on the specific question of what blade steels are currently being offered on what model Natives from the factory?

Thanks to all--W

It is as stated. Current Native FRN are CPM-440V. Current Stainless Natives are AUS-10.

No plans at this time for a G10 prodution Native.

No plans at this time for an Almite Native. (Sorry Nakano).

I wanted the FRN Naitive in CPM 440V, but went for the Stainless model in 10a, that knife sure holds an edge well!
