Native4 CF clip -- does it pull out?

Screws on mine definitely go into the steel liner and the holes in the CF are not even tapped. Considering how thin the CF is, the screws would have to be damn short not to reach the liners.

Thanks, Paul.
Have you reviewed or commented on the Native4? How does it compare with, say a Sage CF?
Is the Native4 worth the extra $$?

I've probably commented on it a few times. I like the Native IV better than the current FRN C41. 4 way clip mounting allows for tip down carry, which I prefer on the rare occasions that I use a clip at all. No Boye dent, I think they're ugly and they makes a knife harder for me to close. Full flat grind improves the cutting power. No swedge grind to uglify the blade. Do wish they'd omitted the bevel on the spine. But it still has the partially occluded Spyderhole and the somewhat cramped relationship between the pivot and Spyderhole that makes operating it less fluid for me than say a Caly 3 or Stretch II.

Comparing it to the Sage is more complex. I prefer the Sage's textured CF, its thicker handle, and it's Spyderhole position relative to the pivot. On the other hand, it has a wrong handed lock, so it's not something I'm likely to every carry. So the Native gets major points for being a midlock and minor points for its tip down carry option. I'm no engineer, but I can't for the life of me understand why wire clips can't use the pivot screw to allow tip down mounting. Native also gets some points for having a lanyard hole.

In reality, I normally carry a Stretch or C83 Persian. When I need to limit myself to a 3" folder, I carry a Caly 3, even though I'd rate its build quality several notches down from the Native IV's. That will probably change when the midlock Sage finally arrives.

Spyderco makes a lot of different configurations. That's a good thing, since hands come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What feels best to me may not feel best, or even good, to you.

Tip-up?

I'm no engineer, but I can't for the life of me understand why wire clips can't use the pivot screw to allow tip down mounting.

I just suggested this a week or two ago, but now that you bring it up, I can see an issue. When we screw in the clip screws, we want them to be as tight as possible to prevent any type of wiggling. If we use the pivot screw, then we would have to tighten that down all the way which would make the pivot too tight. The only way this would work is to have the Manix2-style pivot, which I believe is fitted exactly so that "all the way tight" is the perfect tightness.

An alternative would be something like the clip on the Meerkat:

No, tip down carry is what I prefer, and what the Native IV allows that the Sage series knives do not. So that's a positive point for the Native IV. However, compared to the lock issue it's a relatively minor one since I rarely ever use the clip.

The snugness issue is an excellent point. Like I said, I'm no engineer. :o Of the solutions you propose, the Manix 2 style pivot seems like the better one to me.

Oh, for some reason I thought you were talking about the original Native with only tip-up carry.

But then again, I do see another possible issue: what if one decides to NOT use a clip? Then the pivot will be too loose...

Then the screw would just screw further in until it tightened up on the handle scale? While it might be good in theory I don't think the tolerances are tight enough to ensure that every knife would have a smooth action. I can over tighten my Manix 2 fairly easy and make the blade hard to open.
