Here's a comparison I feel is worthy of discussion and debate.

I've been looking at getting a new smaller knife and these two beauties have my attention.

Spyderco Native5 Fluted Ti
- S35VN Blade
- Fluted Titanium Handle
- Back Lock

Benchmade Sequel 707-1201
- M390 Blade
- Blue Anodized Aluminum Handle w/ G10 Inserts
- Axis Lock

I realize this is a preference call. So tell me what YOUR preference is and why.

Purely opinion but...

I prefer the axis lock to a back lock and M390 over s35vn.

How do they compare in price?

If it's close to the same I say 707 all day

They are only $10 apart in price. I'm leaning toward the 707 too.

If you want it to use as a gentleman's/light utility folder, I'd go 707. I love that knife, great fun to carry, flick, etc. BUT, I found the handle was a little less secure than I would've liked. I never lost my grip on it, but in an emergency situation, I'd like something a little grippier. So if this knife may see use in a more rugged environment, I'd go native.

Is the sequel a bunch smaller? I've been tempted by it, but have in my head that it's a small folder.

The 707 is pretty small. But certainly not "too" small IMO. It's a good fit for front pocket carry (clipless for me).

I have carried a standard 154cm 707 in the past and another limited edition S30V 707 years ago. And although I have evolved into favoring somewhat larger folders now , I always like to have a nice smaller one on me.

I'm losing interest in the fluted Ti Native5 by the minute it seems. I like more of a contrast between the handle and blade.
The "standard" G10 Native5 is becoming more appealing to me now than the Ti. But that 707-1201 is what I'm prob going with as of right now.

Then there's a debate between a few bigger knives that I'm looking at buying very soon. But that's a story for another thread.

Here's a shot of my plain vanilla 707 and Native 5 for size comparison. I love both of these knives and carry them a lot, especially the Native. Echoing what mlanghornes said, the 707 feels more like a gentleman's folder to me, while the Native feels like a tank. It is a beefy little knife for its size. Can't go wrong with either.

Just a personal preference but the axis lock versus back lock solves it for me. Unless I'm getting the super strength of a triad lock I'm just not a back lock fan. However I am a big fan of axis lock for edc use, very quick and easy one handed opening and closing. So for a small EDC knife I would take 707 all day, especially with an m390 blade.

But I gotta say, after looking at the picture above, i bet the native will lock in the hand better. Spyderco makes great ergonomic handles. That being said for edc use I would still go with the 707.
