in South Africa the "norm" for a folder on domestic flights, is that the blade should be shorter that the handwidth of the person who's checking it.

!!!!!

This is a REALLY stupid "rule of thumb", but that's how they do it over here! And EVERY time I get to the boarding gate, the person checking the knife has a different size hand than the last guy, so I usually have problems...

Luckily, most of them know me by now.

I'll try to get the EXACT guidelines from the airlines; wanted to do that a long time ago, anyway!

Family member of mine who travels on the airlines tells me that he rountinely carries his PLAIN edged Native on the domestic flights without any problem. I was told that the airlines don't like the SERRATED blades period. The same person told me he carries a self-addressed stamped envelope on him so that he can mail the knife back to himself if there is a problem that arises. I think he said he has go thru the airports in LA, Boston, and Atlanta w/out problems. Blade length need to be shorter than a credit card - security personnel use their badge IDs as reference.

Hope this is of some help - otherwise call the airline and airport you will be traveling on and ask
