Hi all,
I recently went to Cadiz Spain to buy a traditional navaja. After I did a LOT of net searching, pondering weights, blade length, and a host of other concerns. I went to the recommended shop : Casa Sarafin. I was greatly disappointed in the selection; there were no blades over 5 inches 13cm and the blade thickness was a marginal 3mm . At least it was a carraca and good looking, buffalo scales, nice aggressive blade shape.
After working it bit I tried cutting tests, hair shaving poor, paper, fair....resharpen and it couldn't cut 3/4 inch hemp rope...Thing will NOT take an edge. I'll try again and again, but the 440 Spanish steel sucks...any suggestions welcome.
At least this purchase has led me to the right knife..... Cold Steel XL Espada. Check it out... 71/2 inch blade 19cm and 4mm thick blade, great blade profile , excellent handle ergos. A pocket sword
any way...just a few thoughts.

There is a reason modern things overshadow traditional things. Changing needs, improved construction, and advanced materials. I wouldn't be caught dead with a POS Okapi from South Africa - I bought one and immediately gave that worthless thing to a co-worker - but the U.S.-designed and China-made cold steel Kudu and Eland are wonderful.

Old designs have their merits and many are just as versatile and useful today, but the materials and craftsmanship from eras past can't touch what is available today.

Well, after some time with diamond sharpening this thing is coming around. I'm still testing so I'll report on it. I'm really glad because it's a very pretty knife and at five inches it's a decent size. The quality of build is very good. MTF
