I intend on taking a woodland coarse in the future, however, I was wondering if anyone could clue me in on a good dvd or online sorce for an intro into land nav. using compass and topo.....I have always been able to find my way using maps and general direction, but I would love to be more educated....example: If I am lost in the woods and I know the road is east of where I am and i traveled northwest...I would go east then follow the road south till i get where I started......It works in a pinch but it also sucks....with all the talk of compasses and land nav. it has made me reflect on what i don't know and what I need to learn.....Any suggestions would be great......:Dby the way Jeff and Mike ya'll sound like ya'll don't have much going on you two should have plenty of time to throw together some land nav. dvd's:D:p(just kidding)

No DVDs but we have a powerpoint we built on our web site that pretty much covers what you're looking for.

I found it, how great is that You guys had the answer befor I knew to ask the question......this is why ya'll are survival experts and I cut up dead animals for a living......:)

The powerpoint is not 100 percent detailed since we use this as our talking points in a classroom before we hit the woods on an FTX. With that said, it covers the basics pretty good.

the Air Force SERE manual has step by step instructions and a good chunk on navigation psychology, I'd start by reading that-and it's 100 times easier to have someone there to show you the ropes, unless you have a portable DVD player with you outside while you practice, or know someone that knows their shit, I'd recommend taking a class. The North Face shop here does free outdoor forums, every once in a while they do a navigation or orienteering class. I know Civil Air Patrol does alot of that stuff with their cadets and usually have no problems with outsiders tagging along.

I read a GREAT book a long time ago called Be Expert With Map & Compass by Bjorn Kjellstrom. That book goes over a ton of orinteering info and has really good excercises in it to get you into it. I recommend that book to anyone who wants a better understanding of using a map and compass.
