Navigator Misunderstanding

I resently bought a Navigator with the slits cut in the handle. I was under the impression that those all came with VG-10 unfortunatly mine has GIN-1. What can I do about this??? Will Spyderco replace the blade for a fee? Unfortunatly I can't return it.

BTW: Is GIN-1 any good?

Some of the earlier models were made using GIN-1/2
This is a decent steel, providing both good edge retention and ease of resharpening.
And while i can't speak for Spyderco I doubt they will replace the blade.
If it were mine i'd hang onto it as a discontinued model and buy me a new VG-10 Navigator, heres a pic of mine Ron

The Navigator is being discontinued. I bought one from SMKW for a very good price. It was something like $ 29.99 for VG-10. I would do like SC_rebel suggested if I were you. Keep the GIN-1 and get the newest model on close-out.

If it was me I would just use that Navigator and enjoy it I doubt it will be a collectable because of the steel used (but you never know). And as far as the steel most people would never know the difference if it wasn't marked on the blade, use it if you don't like it trade or sell it.

Having picture trouble Ron? I see BF got you upgraded nice and fast!

I would have rather had VG-10 cause I've had it before and was very happy. I knew they made them in GIN-1 when the handles were solid. My point was this model has the slits in the handle and the GIN-1. I wonder if Sal would have any idea how many were made like this? I use my knives if this was a colectors piece or worth more money it would be waisted on me.

BTTT

I still wanna know the difference between the two steels and If spyderco will replace the blade or not.

Please more info!

Thanks

As far as the steels go, I've had a Native, Police and Civilian in GIN-1 and the use/sharpening/corrosion-resistance was very good. In fact I prefer the "feel" of GIN-1 in my hands to VG-10. The VG-10 is supposedly better as far as edge retention and rust resistance goes, but not to the point of being head and shoulders above GIN-1 (at least IMHO).

As for Spyderco replacing blades, I do not think they can do it (I think I read that it can only be done on very few of the knives, but don't quote me on this). However, you can get one on closeout for an amount very close to the amount you'll spend on shipping the knife back and forth. GIN-1 is good. Use it.

When I got a native in GIN-1 when the ones in CPM440V were available, I initially kicked myself for it, but after years of use it is still holding up just great, is easy to get scary sharp and it's a pleasure to use.

Anywho, just my CAD$0.02 :)

knife11,

I think once you try this knife a bit, you'll see that the GIN-1 blade holds up quite well and is very good in terms of corrosion resistance. If you like the design, then it's pretty hard to beat $30 for another in VG-10; dontcha' think? Now that I mention it, i think I'll order one myself!

All the best, Jeff/1911.
