Navy pics - most impressive

Great stuff Frank. My dad was Navy. He worked the flight deck of an aircraft carrier named The Oriskany in Vietnam. He lost his leg below the knee when one of the cables that catch the planes snapped and whipped his leg right off. I am a civilian, never joined the military, but I get right pissed off when anyone shouts out against our men and women in uniform. I guess it is just in the blood. I was actually born in San Diego at the Naval hospital. I am not sure if it even exists still.

Great pics - thanks for some good memories.

cj - was your dad an ABE?

I was on the Nimitz when our homeport was changed to Bremerton, WA, in 1987. The Oriskany was mothballed there, along with a couple of others. I worked arresting gear, and in our school, we were shown the tapes of three cable snaps that occurred since WWII; the Oriskany was one of them. If I remember correctly, it killed two and injured something like fourteen others. :(

Though sad in a way, this is the Oriskany's ultimate fate;

She's an artificial reef now. (She was built in WWII; I don't know if anything else could have been done with her.)

thx - cpr
